My sister lives in Largo, a 50's concrete block house with a hugh yard. She has updated the bath & kitchen and enclosed a sun room. The house is lovely. Nice older subdivision, well maintained and close to shopping.

Don't know how that fits into your scheme of things, just thought I'd mention it.

In South Tampa, the better neighborhoods are south of Kennedy and north of Gandy, and even better north of Bay to Bay. In St. Pete, the Old Northeast and Snell Isle are my two favorite neighborhoods. Not sure what your price range is, what kind of neighborhood 'feel' you're looking for, what you want the home to be near, etc.

$1500 to rent a single family house or an apartment? We were never in the rental market, but I don't think you're going to find a single family house in the nicer parts of South Tampa or St. Pete for $1500. You should be able to find apartments in that range; probably on the small side in South Tampa. Any of the places I mentioned above will be fine for dog-walking; Old Northeast (where I live) is full of them.

My df just did. It's a nice area, about 11 to 12 blocks or so north of Old NE. Single family home, lovely , not large, but 3/2 and a large yard. $1400 a month. CAn give you more details / broker ? if you want to DM me.
