does anyone have any experience with supplements that may help with emphysema?
I know Vit.'s A & C may be helpful......is it worth looking into Co-Enzyme Q10, (a bit pricey)
or other suggestions?
Husbands pulmonologist just suggested that N-acetyl cycstein (NAC) is worth a try
As always, one should check who should probably not take it.
Eating foods foods rich in beta-carotene may be helpful....CoQ 10 , I believe is a synthetic form for obtaining the antioxidants provided in vegetables containing beta-c.
The NAC is thought to reduce the mucus problem and is thought to reduce the possibilty of lung infection.
Keep in mind, that emphysema itself is irreversable and nothing 'helps' that.
Other supplements....like magnesium.. are taken for making up for any vitamin
depletion caused by other medications commonly used for COPD.Blood tests can identify those.
Proper nutrition and regular planned excercise are more important in slowing the progression
I'm not aware of any supplements used with emphysema. But I would recommend eating a lower carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrate digestion creates more carbon dioxide in the body. People with emphysema have a challenge with trying to eliminate carbon dioxide as it will trap in their lungs.
There is a book called Natural Remedies for Emphysema, COPD on Amazon that I highly recommend. The author goes into depth about many supplements.
