Is it possible for a single person to live in St. Louis on a salary of 33,000/yr? My son has been offered a position at this salary in St. Louis, and we're trying to figure out if it's realistic or not. He's interested in a 1 bedroom apartment, probably downtown to allow for walking distance to work (AT&T).

Anyone who can give us a heads up - we'd be grateful!

I think it's entirely possible, esp. since he's single. That's around the starting salary for many professional jobs here (teaching, nursing, policeman, etc.). If he chooses to live downtown, he may not even need a car and can get around on the metro. Maybe someone here can give you an idea of rents in the Loft district. You can also try one of the salary calculators online that will tell you how much 33K is comparable to where you live.

I think that he'll have trouble affording the $900 + rents of the loft district downtown, but there are many other safe, fun neighborhoods where he can rent a 1 bedroom vintage apartment for $450-600 and be near the metro (light rail) such as University City or the Debaliviere area of the Central West End.

If he does decide to come, we can offer much more specific advice, but suffice to say, yes, you can absolutely live on that kind of money.

Here you can search Downtown for apartments in a specific price range.

For $400-$600 for example, you may be limited. The results:

Is $400-$600 doable Downtown for an apartment? Looks like it. It won't be the best of the lofts, though. Franklin School Apartments are for Senior Citizens only I believe.

I'm sure it is possible....I've been living on a fair amount less than that in a more expensive city (Austin, TX) for a couple years now. However, I do other things like drive an older car that is already paid off (saves a LOT of money), use public transportation when possible, keep a cheap cell plan, and go without cable TV. It is, however, hard to get "ahead" with that type of salary...I tend to spend disposable income on "fun" things (nights out on the town and travel) and haven't been able to save that much. With proper money management skills, your son should be able to do just fine on that salary.

It is 100% possible, I just don't know about downtown...there are other neighborhoods he could afford easily. I just rented a house in Dogtown, very small, but 2 br for $650, and now I'm in another house in Dogtown about 1300+ sq ft for $850.

I have had a wife and son ever since moving to the area, and I started out with a salary of $39k. So I was making $39k with a wife and son, and we were living a good life....going to eat when we want to for the most part, etc. So I would say he could EASILY and I mean easily survive on $33k per year.

And to eagle7, was your post in the least bit helpful? Stay out of our forum, troll.

I've been looking at lofts downtown myself, in anticipation of a move later this summer. I've noticed that a number of buildings have affordable alternative rates. From STLCardsBlues1989's list, I've notice the following buildings have affordable alternative rate options:

Cupples Station
Merchandise Mart
Majestic Stove
Paul Brown

For the Paul Brown building though, a single person cannot earn more than $27,660 and qualify for the affordable alternative rate. It still may be worthwhile to call around to the other places and see what their income limits are.

In any case, based on a few weeks of trolling St. Louis craigslist ads, I can tell you that there is still a lot of affordable housing out there in urban neighborhoods close to downtown. Compared to the inflated real estate and rent prices on the west coast, St. Louis is very affordable, even accounting for salary differences.

i think it's doable. When my friends and I started at the airlines we were all making about 22k/yr (back in 06'). Several of those pilots found ways to stay in St. Louis City on those wages, in relatively safe parts of town, and scrape by. If you don't have expensive bills (student loans, smart phone plans, car note) and you keep your rent in check you should be able to make it. He'll do even better if he's able to a roommate after moving to town.

Important part of staying on budget will be controlling fuel costs, so living close to work would be key. Transportation isn't the greatest, but between the bus and a little treading on foot he should be able to make it to work without much trouble, and getting around St. Louis city doesn't really require a car. If a car is desired, or already owned, any beater should do (which is dual purpose, it'll provide transportation! And often, look bad enough to keep people from messing with your shiznit!!!).

Couple of those poor pilot friends were living in the Soulard area, in small apartments for less than 800/mo.
