I will be working at the VARO at 9700 Paige Ave. I would like to get an apartment so I can get to know the area before buying. Any advice on where to look that is at least semi-safe? I'd like to stay under $1,000 a month. Thanks!

Creve Coeur and Maryland Heights are probably the best choices. While I wouldn't feel unsafe in that immediate area, MH and CC are a lot nicer and will still give you a relatively short commute.

If you prefer a slightly more urban setting though, parts of University City may also have what you're looking for.

Good luck!

If you are cool with a 1 bedroom, there are many nice looking apartments in the western portion of University City, which is going to be mostly professionals and quite safe. Look at everything along I-170 between Old Bonhomme and Delmar, all along McKnight. Maybe something like this:

or this

On Delmar going east from I-170 toward the center of U City is also lined with 2 and 4 unit vintage apartments like this one:

That's all good and safe and a bit closer to the entertainment district (U City Loop - Delmar between Trinity and Skinker)

There are also a handful of vintage rentals in Clayton like this one that would be awesome if you could get in:

Which is as safe as it gets and pretty much exclusively yuppies. Very nice area and still just ~10 minutes (maybe 15 on a bad day) from 9700 Page.
