Hello,

Looking for a place close to St Louis (20 Min) that is low crime and has some country appeal - maybe a couple acres with horses etc.

Homeschooling friendly is a plus...

Close to Highland, Troy, a plus...

What are the house taxes there? It looked high... I would be moving from east coast back "home" so the houses look low priced, but the taxes may be rough...

I see that St Louis is again the top in Crime. I grew up in the area and have since been all around the USA. I can't say that it "felt" bad last time I was in the city (past summer). In fact, the area seems MORE friendly than most cities I have been to - try DC or Richmond, uggg.... Maybe the numbers are being skewed by some other factor...

Thanks for any input....

Greetings First, is there any particular part of StL that you desire to be 20 mins away from? Are you talking downtown, airport, etc.? In any case, as you are probably aware you can be to, for example Union Station area in ~30 minutes from Highland/Troy. Some very good info will hopefully come from CellarBelle... she is in the Edwardsville area, and even tho' she is in IL, I forgive her as she is a rabid Blues fan too.

As to the StL "crime ranking" - ignore that BS, and instead be aware of yourself when in 'specific' parts of the area, esp. during darkness. And yes, the numbers are indeed skewed, as they do not take into account the entire metro area - just the StL city numbers. Matter of fact, the FBI discourages people from even giving any credit to that ranking - many variables are in play when trying to compare this and that city. However, even w/ that said, I would still be leery and cautious when out and about in certain areas.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. 20 minutes from the arch/riverfront would be nice. We just want to be close to plenty of activities for the kids - museums, zoo, baseball, etc; yet be able to blast back over to some country area in under 30 minutes. I have heard Edwardsville is a decent place. I just haven't spent much time there, so I'm not sure what the culture is like.

Unforutnately, I'm in a time crunch today and can't reply with my usual long and laborious info about "The Ed". Please check my other posts to learn about Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area. Highland is a nice area if you are interested in some space/country and horse riding. I know someone moving here from CA and she has found a place to board her horse in St. Jacob which is close to Highland.

Only about 30 minutes to watch The Blues... gotta love that! Thanks to Shadow for the props!
