I would live in Shaw in a heartbeat. I had a dear friend that lived on Flad for 3 years with no problems whatsoever.

My advice, don't move there! My brother is a cop downtown and he has to live downtown. He lives in an apt. Just south of Tower Grove Park. Lots and lots of crime there--each and every night. He has to use The Club on his Kia and still empties all the contents of his car each night. Also, don't believe the data on this site about crime in St. Louis. If a criminal breaks into 10 cars in an evening in one parking lot, they file the report as 1, yes 1, property crime, not 10. My brother won't walk where you are thinking about living at night because it is just too dangerous, and he's one tough dude. Head more west and be safer.

Downtown is a neighborhood in St. Louis City. Shaw is also a neighborhood in St. Louis City. Tower Grove Park is not Downtown. Those who think everything in St. Louis City is "downtown" is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Cars get broken into in the suburbs all the time -- I would recommend no one leave anything of value in their car if they'd like to keep it, no matter where they live.

And probably the first clue that the person in question is not familiar with the city in any way, shape, or form

It's ok to have good intentions and try to help, but seriously, when you don't really have any idea what you're talking about (where are you from that you don't even know where downtown is??? Even the most obnoxious city bashers from the county at least know where downtown is... this suggests rather strongly that you are not remotely in touch with the city) maybe you should let it go...

That said, I personally wouldn't hesitate about picking to live in Shaw, at least not if you even slightly understand city life.

Default Shaw - Cleveland Ave

I'm relocating to STL from Tulsa, OK next week. I found an apt on Craigslist that I want to look at, the pics look great and the street view on google maps makes it look like a decent area. The Apt is in the 4500 block of Cleveland Ave. I will have a dog that I will need to walk every morning and night. I'll be working in Maryland Heights and might often arrive home after dark (especially in the winter). How safe would this be for a woman alone?

Thank you,
STLn00b

@ Stlnoob. My fiance's best girl friend lives right by there. Possibly on Cleveland ave. She's about 5feet2 and 100lbs. she loves the area and I've never personally heard her talk bad about the crime.

Be street smart. Avoid talking to people who you determin as "shady." And don't leave your valuables sitting on the dash or on the seat and you'll likely have really great experience living in that neighborhood.
