I've seen a lot of posts about how bad NW Springfield is, with its higher crime rate and run-down look and feel. It seems to be a popular consensus that the southern side of town is much nicer.

But I'm curious... what is the NE side of Springfield like? Is it worse/better than the NW side? How does it compare to the southern areas?

What's the crime rates like there? Is the area improving... or is it stagnating like the NW side?

Any advice helps. Thank you.

We looked at renting a house up there and it seemed like a nice area to me.
The house was near a golf course, but there did'nt seem to be parks or many children around.

If you need more help or would like me to check out anything for you, I would be happy to.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking into buying or renting in the area south of East Chestnut Express, north of E Grand, east of South Barnes, and west of the 65. What's that area like?

Thanks for the offer, Bcuz, but there's no need. Just looking into the general area right now.

Autumn - are you familiar with Google Maps street view? Many of the streets in the area you are asking about have been scanned. Worth a shot if you have the time. Good luck

Lots of rental properties of all kinds - single family, duplex, apartment buildings. The closer you get to Grand the more owner occupied houses you find. Virtually all adjacent areas are commercial, warehouse, that sort of thing. To me the big drawback is the lack of services - although that may be about to change, depending upon just what is done at Chestnut and 65. For a lot of people the big plus is proximity to jobs.

Not all of NW Springfield is "bad". There are some quite livable neighborhoods scattered here and there.

What sort of reputation does the NE side have? I don't want to live in an area that people think of as the meth-head or run-down section of town. Is it a safe, quiet, pleasant area? Is it growing, or are homes hard to sell like on the NW side (I saw dozens of really cheap houses over there)? Are there any problems it has associated with the commercial and warehouse buildings? Any advice helps a lot.

I've looked on the Google streets thing, but my slow computer has a very hard time handling it so it takes forever to view anything. Thanks.

It's better than NW Springfield, but there are still some shadier areas up there. I find that the area around the golf course and the NE areas that are (sort of) in the country are pretty nice. Avoid the central part of the NE area--the areas around Division and Commercial street are generally good to avoid on both sides of town.

Thanks for replying. How about the areas along E Cherry, S Sparks, and S Peach? Are there any areas to TOTALLY avoid?

Also, is it safe around the MSU campus? I noticed homes were very cheap around there too.

Is Springfield growing in a good way? Are the police plentiful and there if you need them? I've seen a lot of cities that are short-staffed on officers in recent years or are making massive cutbacks.

Also, what's the quality of the hospitals in the area like? Arey the modern and advanced?

Thank you.

From what I have noticed, the police officers here are few and far between. Probably why there are so many traffic accidents and people who run red lights.
Our vehicles were broken into, and the police do not come out for "minor" things such as that, even though there was damage.

I would suggest you come and visit the area before moving here. You have a lot of questions that you may see differently viewing than others.
