a very select number of teams have the unusual distinction of their names being actually things. These would include:
Texas Rangers: state law enforcement agency
Colorado Rockies: a range within the Rocky Mts
Baltimore Oriole: a type of bird
St. Louis Blues: song title....from a variety of the blues
Buffalo Bills: Buffalo Bill Cody
can you think of any other team, be it professional or college, present or extinct, renamed or not that would be named as these are?
Oklahoma City Thunder
Denver Nuggets
Utah Jazz
Miami Heat
Orlando Magic
Phoenix Suns
none of those work. the idea is that the team's name has to have another meaning, that the term has to exist....so if "Colorado Rockies" are a mountain range and "Texas Rangers" are a state police...what is "Miami Heat"?
New Jersey Devils, a legendary creature that was said to have roamed the southern part of the state. Probably not a real thing but worth a mention. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil
New Orleans Jazz, a jazz festival in New Orleans and by some accounts, a style of jazz that is better known as Dixieland music. No longer relevant as Utah is the current home of that franchise. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixieland
Probably not applicable in the OPs case but Houston Texans. Houston is a city in Texas, and residents of the state are known as Texans, so there is that.
Miami Marlins
Miami Dolphins
Milwaukee Brewers
New York Mets
Pittsburgh Steelers
Houston Texans
Dallas Cowboys
San Francisco 49ers
New England Patriots
Toronto Blue Jays
Detroit Red Wings
Washington Capitals
Washington Nationals
Green Bay Packers
Pittsburgh Pirates

thanks, Canes...you're the only one who got what I was getting at.
This thread makes no sense. Basically all teams are named after actual things.
Miami Heat are named after the extreme heat Miami can experience.
Chicago Cubs are named after baby bear.
Chicago Bears are named after grown up bear
Phoenix Suns are named after the star at the center of our solar system.
Are you asking which team names have a connection to the place the team plays? If so I'd say...
Baltimore Ravens - Edgar Allen Poe (The Raven)
Pittsburgh Steelers - large steel industry
Minnesota Vikings - Large Scandinavian population
Minnesota Twins - Twin Cities
