Why do European horses like Highland Reel even compete in the BC Classic?

It's a gutsy move, and I love it as a sports fan, but the odds of a European winning the Classic are 20-1 at best. Even Frankel would have it tough winning the Classic.

Nov. 4 and 5: Breeders's Cup. Many good races with all the top horses. Not seeing Exaggerator though since he retired. Maybe winning 1 of the last 4 races and 7th or worse in the other 3 led to retirement.
