It's theatre disguised as a sport! Though you DO need to have athletic ability, high pain thresholds, and the willingness to train really, really hard to participate in such a production! I know this from friends who have personally partaken in professional wrestling productions!
I remember an interview Vince McMahon of the WWE gave, He said that Ted Turner bought WCW /TBS, then called him and said "Hey Vince ! Good News I am in the wresting business!"
to which Vince McMahon said
"That's great Ted. Because we are in the Entertainment Business"
World Wrestling Entertainment.
(They lost the lawsuit to the World Wildlife Fund over the use of the logo/name WWF so Vince named it WWE to reflect more of the entertainment focus.)
We refer to it here as "Entertainment wrestling"
Sadly, the WWE just is not very Entertaining to us anymore.
It's a sports-oriented theatre(or known as sports entertainment)
Monster Jam, wipeout, Japanese Variety Show, robot wars. Those are also all sports entertainment.
Back in the days of Bruno and Jack Brisco wrestling while scripted was more of a sport than it is now. They expertly portrayed competition and a majority of the guys were legitimate high school and school college wrestlers who could stretch anyone in a real life situation at anytime. Now it is a circus of tattooed long haired wackjobs hitting each other with chairs. It is beyond dumb and has been for years. EVen during this so called heralded attitude era. My friend and I were in a restaurant talking about old wrestling form the 70's, and how we do not care about any of it today. A man in his 60's walked up to us and identified himself as Brian. He wrestled in Texas and the carolinas, then quit the business, and wants nothing to do with it. He said he enjoyed overhearing our conversation and agreed 100%.
I wouldn't characterize it as traditional sport.. But pro wrestling does require athletic ability & physical stamina/courage. I would say it requires the same kind of physical prowess as stunt work. And a lot of pro wrestlers did have traditional sports backgrounds.. guys like Kurt Angle (Olympic wrestling), Kevin Nash (basketball), etc..
Mark William Calaway, better known as The Undertaker also played basketball prior to his wrestling career. He played football and basketball at Waltrip High School and played basketball at Angelina College and Texas Wesleyan University

but they crossed the line into script athletes once they became professional wrestlers.
I wouldn't necessarily consider WWE a sport but if somebody did consider WWE a sport I could easily see why they would say that.
