Does anyone think the Olympics should go back to being an all amateur sport again? Or is it not possible in this day and age? My friends have told me that it used to be like this back in the day. Thoughts?

Be kinda tough as just about every Olympian these days takes much government money to finance his/her training, just amateur and it would be rather boring, how it is now is a gathering of the worlds best.

The whole point is THE BEST of each country vs each other. What's the point if it's the 'best people who don't take money'?
That's not really the best.

I thought it was that as long as you're not making money doing the sport as a living, you're an amateur. If the government was willing to finance training for Olympics, would that disqualify the athlete as an amateur? I am aware that Home Depot provides training assistance funds to athletes who are trying to train for Olympics too.

Dirty little secret, the Olympics have never been "amateur".

Amateurism was a quaint Victorian concept and should have been put to rest along with her majesty.

Amateurism isn't as noble as people make it out to be. Sports were leisure class activities for gentry that became popular with middle and working class people after the industry revolution. Amateurism was the method used by elitists to keep sporting events away from the working class and confined to elite universities and private clubs. These european gentry didn't want to mix with the riff raff and working class people couldn't afford to do sports for free at fancy clubs. That's why working class sports such as cycling, baseball, and boxing have long had professional histories, while elitist sports like tennis and golf took much longer to develop as professional sports.

Not a chance.

The reason being that a number of countries will just subvert the "amature" rules because their athletes aren't free to even choose.

ie) Cubans
