I lived in Aberdeen until 5 years ago, moved to Sioux Falls to go to school for greenhouse. All of our family is still there so we visit every couplel of months.
Schools are pretty good, several jr. highs to choose from (2-3 if I remember right) and a new high school in the last few years. Class sizes are not large so lots of one-on-one. The town really gets into athletics and they have a big parade for Gypsy Days (NSU) every year.
Rent prices are a little high but not outrageous, hope you don't have dogs though because that will make it impossible to rent. Home sales are decent and prices are average.
Jobs shouldn't be hard to come by. What do you do for a living? There's a new factory building the blades for the big wind turbines - they pay well and provide good benefits. There's also 3M and several other large factories to choose from.
Restaurants not bad - try the Flame, Mavericks, or one of the sports bars.
Bars are abundant and varied from sports bars to strip bars and they have several for the 40-60 crowd.
Only bad thing is that there are NO towns close by that are more than blips. You're gonna have to do some driving to find anything larger than Aberdeen.
Not a bad place to raise a family all things considered.
Well, we do own a dog. She is part of our family, so I guess we might have to look elsewhere. My DH is a district manager for the states of ND,SD, and north west MN. So I guess I will keep looking. The no state tax was an attraction for us.
I've been spoiled here in the Rockies...we live in a town where children and dogs are so loved.

I applaud you for your devotion to the furry member of your family. I share your feelings about that.
I have heard from others that finding a rental that takes dogs is tough in certain areas. I wish the best of luck to you, Blue Sky, in your search and hope you pick South Dakota.
Here's a link to some pictures: aberdeen, sd - Google Image Search. One thing I always found curious about Aberdeen, SD is that is had been known (not sure if this still is the case) as having a very high population of millionaires per capita. Not sure why, but interesting nonetheless.
Aberdeen is home to Northern State University, a decent college with a good music and Education program. I have family that went to school here and they all seemed to enjoy living in Aberdeen.
Do try the Chamber of Commerce website (www.aberdeen-chamber.com) or the Parks and Rec site for City photos and such (www.aberdeen.sd.us/parks/ ). Check out the new Aquatics Center! Cool even for us "oldsters".
One option if you are serious about Aberdeen is to post an ad in the local paper. List what you need (3 brms, X baths, have dog, well behaved) There actually are places in Aberdeen that will take dogs, they are few and far between but they are there. This would be your best bet for house for rent.
Also, have you considered one of the smaller towns outside Aberdeen?? Bath, Groton, Warner, Westport or Frederick would all be a reasonable drive and you would have better luck with the dog.
