We are a mid 40s family with 2 teen boys considering a move to either the Dakotas or Mn. We will be looking for a house with small acreage to garden, train my dog, and enjoy the outdoors. I am a medical professional. It appears that ND has housing problems and none for sale with small acreage. Mn has higher taxes but housing easier to find. Haven't really looked at SD as much. Looking for area that has good hunting/fishing and easy access to hospital Dr. Offices for work. Willing to drive some but don't want to be on the road an hr each way. Any suggestions about SD? The climate change will be welcome as we coming from the heat and humidity of western Ky. Incidentally I am aware of the cold winters as I am a UND graduate.
The best fishing in South Dakota is on the resevoirs of the Missouri river. There is also some pretty good hunting along the Missouri. I would suggest Chambelain as a place to start looking. It is large enough to support more than one hospital and is close to the interstate highway which might extend your commuting distance. There are many other options, but if you are an avid fisherman, the Missouri River is where you want to be.

uh
I agree, uncleharley! If you want to be close to the reservations and yet have outdoor activities the choices are pretty much Chamberlain, Pierre and Mobridge. Pierre probably offers the most cultural and education opportunities, but Chamberlain is pretty darn fun!! Don't know what the housing market is there, though...........
Really enjoy walleye fishing, but my favorite sport is waterfowl hunting. My boys eat and breathe waterfowl hunting. They like to deer hunt as well but are used to hunting small wooded lots and fields from a tree stand not open prairie.
You might want to consider the Wagner area also. They have a hospital, three clinics, and an IHS clinic. Close to the Fort Randall Dam on the Missouri River. Good Hunting and fishing.

Sioux Falls has enjoyed a major influx of money in the past 5+ years because of Denny Sanford's investment in the health care scene. It is a city on the rise, and definitely worth a look. There are many rural areas that would fit your acreage needs (Sioux Falls Acreages for Sale | Acreages/Farm/Country Homes in Sioux Falls, SD). Hunting and fishing is a big part of the local scene, especially pheasant hunting. Good luck.
Rapid City sounds like it would be a good choice. There is a lot of stuff to do outdoors in the black hills. There are many areas within 15 minutes of the city that you could live in and have some land. Plus, being a larger city, Rapid has the major health system for western South Dakota and the Black Hills. South Dakota also has no state income tax. Plus the weather in Rapid City is a lot more mild compared to North Dakota or Eastern South Dakota. There is fishing in the hills and some hunting in the hills too.
RC01 - What areas just 15 minutes outside of Rapid would you suggest for someone looking for horse propery/land? I like Rapid City, but would want to be in a place with some acreage too. Thanks for any help!
Hermosa, New Underwood, maybe elk creek Piedmont areas. Most areas within 15 miles of Rapid has been developed... Well north and south of Rapid.
