I used to think Greenville was superior to Columbia but the reality is they are about the same thing.
Greenville's got a more "beautified" downtown with the cool pediastrian bridge over the waterfall and maybe a few stores like REI that Columbia doesn't have. Columbia's Vista area has some stuff and it's nice too, just has a different vibe.
the main thing is how close to you want to be to the beaches and or mountains.
If you are a single guy looking to live in either Greenville or Columbia.............pick Charleston!!! Charleston has, by far, the hottest and most abundant women in all of SC, and its not even close. It really is ridiculous down here. A guy would have to be the biggest doofus and loser of all time to NOT pull a chick that is way out of his league down here. They flock here for the "romantic" side of Charleston. You just meet unlimited numbers of hot young women who come here looking for fun and romance. I heard the rumors of it, then moved here, and it is true!

that's true, you do see more women in charleson area, although columbia has a lot due to the university. greenville is the most family oriented of the three. girls seem to like greenville's downtown and if you take them down to the waterfall bridge and park especially at night they will love you.

That is a great characteristic of Charleston, there are nice women everywhere in the lowcountry. However, being close to a university with 30k+ students is also not a bad thing. Columbia or Charleston would not be a bad choice for a single guy.
And in some places, they are more likely to be married than single which might not be quite as appealing for a single guy (such as myself).
You havent been to Kingstree lately then... Two hot women there means it has the most hot women per capita in South Carolina other than maybe Andrews or St. Matthews
