How comfortably can I expect to live on $50,000 salary in SC? Thrive vs Survive?? Is $50,000 barely getting by? Would it be easier in Greenville/Spartanburg or in Columbia?
How hard is it to find a job in the $40,000 - $50,000 range? I'm doing operations management right now for a railroad company in Kansas City, MO.
The reason that I ask, my family is still in the Seattle area and $100,000 a year there is surviving not thriving, you can live on it, but not grandly.
I'd like to move to SC, but I'm making in the low $50,000's with my current job and don't want to move to SC if it's going to cost too much to survive.
You can live comfortably ("thrive") in either location with that income. Greenville has countless free public opportunities available to have fun year-round. Check this place out and ask any questions in the Upstate subforum.
Using the old 2 1/2 rule of thumb, you could afford a $125K house with a $50K yearly income (and of course you might qualify for more, with all the "creative financing" packages lenders offer these days). From what I've seen in the Columbia MLS listings, you can definitely get a decent house in that price range.
I'm not sure how easy or difficult it would be for you to find a job with that pay range in either location. Depending on your level of expertise, you may be able to snag a job in state government that pays that much.
You can live quite well in Columbia on $50K a year; as far as finding a job, the unemployment rate is very low and there are many white collar jobs in Columbia.
50,000 a year is enough to live comfortable in Spartanburg. Houses are very reasonable and taxes are low. You'd be surprised at how much you save with lower heating costs in the winter and the absence of winter expenses (like snow removal, winter coats etc.) You can get a lot of house for your money here and it is a pleasant place to live.
You might want to consider Columbia has higher daytime temperatures than Greenville.
