If you were to start a team from scratch, and had the option of picking one of the two, who would it be and why?

Personally, I would take Ronaldo because he:

- is a free-kick specialist
- is one the fastest players in the world
- is a long range shooter
- is deadly in the air
- can play on the left or right wing
- can go through the best of defenders

I know that Messi has some of those traits as well, but I simply believe that Ronaldo is step above him. Please share your opinions...

Why would you want a cry-baby, diving, ***** on your team. I wouldnt take Ronaldo on my team if I didnt have to pay him. What a waste of oxygen

I'd take Ronaldo. Petulance is a requirement for superstars.

messi hands down, genius, i don't even know why people still debate this messi is a better player, ask any of the worlds top footballers who they would pick and most would say messi, he stands out in a team full of superstars, i would rather have iniesta, xavi and villa in my team than ronaldo also, so for him to stand out in possibly the best football team to walk the earth i think that answers the question

I could name tons of players I would rather have on my team than Ronaldo. He isnt a team player at all and this is the ultimate team sport. Messi makes those around him better, I am not sure anyone could say the same for Ronaldo.

The questions that never get answered: who's better Ronaldo or Messi; who's better Pele or Maradona.

If I was a defender charged with marking either Ronaldo or Messi, I'd opt to play against Messi. He can be overwhelmed by size and speed, Ronaldo is a physical force, not just a tricky customer.

I'm in the camp that is not convinced of Messi's greatness. We've only seen him on two of the best teams in the world (Barca, Argentina). An attacker gets endless opportunies playing at the top of those teams. Put Messi on any other team in La Liga (besides RMadrid) and his goal stats would be cut in half or more.

His performances with the Argentina shirt on have been decent at best. You could not say he was the best player in the world after the last World Cup, that was clearly evident. I also think he might flop in the EPL, he'd be outpaced and warn down.

Ronaldo is the more likely to take a game by the scruff of the neck and tell his team mates, "You're either with or against me, but be sure to know that those 100K + in the stands are ALL behind me as I lead the way. You can keep pace, or be overrun based on their fury or joy at the outcome".
Messi is a pretty player, if soccer was a non-contact sport, like figure skating, he'd be the best of the best.

are you serious? lol messi takes plenty of games by the scruff of the neck and delivers trophies, chamions league and la liga what have and what will real win with ronaldo, not a lot, anyone who knows about football in my opinion, would say messi without a doubt is better, ronaldo is no doubt a great player, there is a few ahead of him though, messi, xavi, iniesta, villa, drogba and gerrard (wish he was at a great team so could prove just how great he is, he is the ultimate player for taking games by the scruff of the neck! if he was at a real, man u, barca, even man city, spurs etc he would be even better) and messi is a good bit ahead of even these great players, and will more than likely go on to be the greatest ever footballer, me thinks!

When your team is down and needs someone to step up and change the game, Ronaldo is there and Messi is not. Every team needs a player who is able to take it to the next level and do it alone when it counts: Arsenal & Henry, Madrid & Zidane, Bayern & Robben, Inter & Ibrahimovic, etc. Have you seen how "average" Messi plays in the Champions League away from home?

messi, his work rate is wayyy better than c-ron's, he does the little things that you don't always see, supports his teammates better. c-ron gets petulant if things dont' go his way.

messi plays defense, c-ron doesn't. I wouldn't want to see messi in the EPL, some english plodder would snap his tibia and fibula in two like what happened to Eduardo, Aaron Ramsey or Diaby.
