Russia was a bad decision but at least it will provide a fairly normal footballing experience due to the lack of sharia law. Qatar is just a horrible choice.
No. A lot of the workers may come from India etc., but they earn a whole lot of money working in Qatar. They are not a part of Qatari society, but they don't need to be as they have their own communities. Nor are they abused or anything like that. Qatar is quite progressive and sophisticated for a Muslim country.
$2 dollars an hour would be a good wage for an indian living in india, but for for a person living in a "first world" country with a GDP per capita of $70,000 per person it is terrible.
I know there were protests by construction workers years ago, but I assume they are getting paid more these days. Otherwise workers would simply not come to Qatar or similar countries such as Kuwait or Dubai anymore as there is more than enough work in India as well.
Franz Beckenbauer has suggested that Qatar stages the world cup in January!
Might be worth consideration. The African Cup is played then, the Rugby World Cup is in the middle of our rugby season, and not every country's domestic league would actually be affected as much as the English one. The bidding process has proved the major European leagues don't have the clout they used to, and it's mainly for our benefit that the WC is played when it is, ditto most of the games being shown at sociable hours for us regardless of timezone - but for how much longer?
