I highly recommend the 2 listed here:

- Coleman Twin LED High-Performance lantern, which runs on 8 D batteries and blasts out a scorching 580 lumens. It's a fairly big unit, and will light up the night. Ours have lasted 2 years on one set of batteries if used just occasionally. Available at Amazon for about $66 with free shipping.

- Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Xtreme lantern, which runs on just 3 D batteries and puts out a respectable 240 lumens. Very small but bright enough for task lighting. Also has good run time on the 3 batteries as it has a high, low, and strobe setting. I confess I like the strobe setting to disorient intruders! Just $25 at Amazon, with free shipping.

We have owned these lanterns for about 3 years, and both types have held up well. The Rayovac is built like a little tank. We have 4 of those, and 2 of the Coleman (plus a regular Coleman that is not High-Performance). These lanterns will keep our entire house lit up in an outage.

I can second the recommendation on the Colman but that is the only LED I've tried. The OP might look up camping lanterns on the Cabela's or other similar sporting good stores' websites which allow customers comments and ratings. See there what other purchasers have to say about the product. I've found those somewhat helpful in deciding what purchase to eliminate from consideration.
