Try Ballard...for food and events. You pretty much can't go wrong with Ballard.

Ballard is the cream of the crop when it comes to neighborhoods in Seattle.

Is there a specific street(s)/areas for decent night life in Ballard? This is completely foreign territory for me.

Ballard Ave. and Market Street intersection is probably the main node. Bars and restaurants are all along Ballard Ave, there are also some places on Market Street, and on other sides streets.

Bars I would suggest are:

People's pub
Hazelwood
Smoke shop
Ocho
Hattie's Hat
Conor Byrne
La Isla
Zayda Buddy's (more of a restaurant, though)

There are plenty of other places as well...

Fremont, which is a short cab ride away, also has some good bars.

So how were St Paddy's activities? I thought about Fado and the Owl & Thistle at 1st & Columbia, but decided I might as well do (http://www.flickr.com/photos/67928702@N00/sets/72157623648723006/detail/ - broken link)the mecca for Seattle Irish music, Kells. With the addition of the Post restaurant next door, besides the usual souvenir t-shirt, your $20 gets you music on four stages for 14 hours. My favorite of the afternoon was the Smokin Shamrocks duo from Ireland. High energy and amusing Irish and rock cover tunes by a guitarist-singer and one helluva multi instrumentalist-singer, Cormac Duffin:
