Are there certain districts that are hiring more teachers than others?
The further out districts had more openings than say Seattle or Bellevue. Bellevue requires even their substitutes to have teaching certificates.

It was just a bad year to be looking because of the economy. There might be an improvement this summer, if districts get back their funding. And there's always a lot of jobs in special ed and pre-school.

The certification process is here: Certification - OSPI

The original poster shouldn't have a problem getting certified in WA, since she already has both a Masters and a certificate in another state.

That would be great news! I'm in Minnesota now and the elementary jobs are extrememly competitive while there tends to be more high school openings (mostly the obvious math and science positions). I hope your information isn't dated because then I can breathe a little!

Unhappy Teacher Jobs in Washington

Good luck finding a job! I am a substitute (2 1/2 years now), not by choice. I sub in four districts in the Kitsap area. I used to work in Seattle (another profession) so even thought about trying to teach on that side of the water, but there wasn't much available. Even being a substitute is difficult because there are so many "retired" teachers that are subbing and then with all the layoffs, those teachers rifted are also subbing. Last year I was busy everyday. However, this year I'm barely keeping my head above water. With all the budget cuts, there are less teacher enrichment days, less teacher meetings or classes that required a sub in the classroom. I have a second part-time job that I work more hours than I do as a full-time sub. Look at the District websites for available jobs, which are few, but keep checking for openings. Anyone moving to the Seattle area may want to think about a second job to have a dependable income.
