Having a lot of surface area relative to girth, I'm simply not built for cold water swimming. I could hit up the krispy kreme for lunch from now until July, but either way I'd probably have a coronary either from cold shock or the grease.

Lake Washington (especially Madrona, Madison, Mount Baker and Seward Park beaches) are popular areas to train for triathlon swims, with almost all wearing wetsuits.

I've never had swimmer's itch. I swam in Silver Lake in Everett all the time as a kid, and don't recall any ill effects.

I've also "swam" at Alki Beach in the sound, and it's not exactly a recommended experience. It's freezing cold, and the rocks chew up your feet. Any wave you get comes from the wake off the ferries.

I swam at Mounger Pool in Magnolia a few times as a kid (90's), and don't recall it being salt water back then, but it did have cool slides and stuff IIRC.
