We may be considering a move to Seattle, and I'm wondering if there are any safe areas with good schools that would be walkable (or very short public transport commute) the the university medical center? Thanks!

Very close to the UW Medical center and nice, safe, walkable with a great elementary school, but somewhat expensive is Montlake.
A little further are the neighborhoods of Laurelhurst, View Ridge, Ravenna, Bryant, and Wedgwood. All are pleasant neighborhoods with good schools.

Being familier with all the communities you mention, I have to agree with you.
My next door neighbor is a prof. in the School of Engineering and he walks to work. This is on 22und Ave. on the north end of Capital Hill, so, that area can also be considered, -if you like to walk.

Another question-- do any of these neighborhoods have their own little "main street" typ area, so that one could walk to restaurants, shops, groceries, etc.? We'd really prefer to drive as little as possible! Thanks!

This is not walkable but the commute on the bus isn't too bad. Try Bothell, very cute and friendly town.

Yes almost all of them have a "high" street. I'd rank the walkable retail as following:

1. Ravenna/Roosevelt (Almost everything common is reachable on foot)
2. Montlake. (Montlake Ave. has some nice stuff but its small so you probably have to drive to U-Village for groceries for example. )
3. Bryant - Foot access to U-Village/35th/55th or 65th depending on which part you're actually in.
3. Wedgewood - A little more car oriented.
4. Laurelhurst (the most purely residential)
