My DH of two m onths has recently been talking about moving to Savannah, by that I think he means in a couple of years from now. I think he is thinking about a possible job offer that would include a transfer down there. He is employed by Tenet. and works as a hospital patient access registrar. I'm wondering about the possibility of more jobs down there and perhaps better pay? I also used to entertain the possibility of attending the Savannah COllege of Art and Design but heard it is expensive to get into. I have a 2 year degree in fine arts. I don't know if I could get the Hope grant or Pell grant since I am not single anymore and a young stsudent still living at home. So what can someone expect from moving to Savannah? We are both native Georgians. We are not from "old money" or wnything though. I saw Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and found it intriguing. I also like the atmosphere and picturiesque quality of Savannah because it reminds me of New Orleans. We recently went on a weekend trip down there but the talk of moving to Savannah happened before then. I know two people who have relocated down there. Mutual friends

It depends on where you can afford to live and what you enjoy doing. Good jobs are still hard to find. Salaries are probably lower than the atlanta metro area are. Savannah is historically and architecturally interesting. It has a high crime rate and a half decent beach, if you can get there. Traffic is getting worse every day. It's no paradise. Plenty bugs, very hot, only two seasons.

You can as easily blend into middle class anonymity here as anywhere. The southern half of town looks like everywhere else in the US. I'm through recommending the city. It's gotten too crowded.

If your husband needs to work IN a hospital, there are only three here.

DH? Designated hitter? I'm not in favor of that rule.

Well, for what its worth, I always wanted to visit the midwest, especially the Upper Midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, etc.) I enjoy the Southern cuisine and the architecture (of which Savannah has in spades) but never been a big fan of Southern culture. I am New-Age-y and the Christian conservatism down here has never meshed well. Also, I hear that white collar jobs that pay more than $9 an hour are hard to come by in Savannah just like anywhere.

Many parts of the upper Midwest, away from the Twin Cities & Madison are VERY conservative, politically & religiously.

I have to agree with ellie. We moved here 7 months ago. My wife was able to transfer here through her company. We are already looking for another place to live. Crime and bugs / weather are enough reasons to look further. In fact we are thinking of going back to AZ. The 110 degree heat which caused my wife to want to move is looking pretty darn good about now, especially with the most recent 2 shootings just around the corner from our house.

TO THE OP: Savannah is a glorious place that many consider paradise and never desire to leave, but which others find intolerable. To each his own. Everybody has their personal likes and dislikes. Good thing for you is, Griffin is less than 4 hours away and you've got plenty of opportunity to come down and visit, really get to know the city and decide for sure whether it's where you want to be.

As for jobs, someone above mentioned that Savannah "only has three hospitals." They probably don't know that Griffin, where you'd be coming from, only has one very small one! Savannah has a HUGE medical community that serves the entire Southeast / Coastal Georgia region and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Memorial University Medical Center is the de facto "Grady" for this part of the state. St. Joseph's / Candler is the private provider with multiple locations and hundreds of beds. There are endless numbers of specialists and general practitioners in Savannah, as well as other hospitals in Hilton Head, Effingham, Bryan and Liberty counties (all suburbs within 30 minute drive). In other words: THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF HEALTHCARE JOBS IN SAVANNAH ... and the number is only going to continue to grow.
