Grand opening for Global Sports Institute in Venice (Video)

For video:

It’s here! Thursday was the grand opening of the Global Sports Institute (GSI). It’s a moment that’s been months in the making for the City of Venice and Sarasota County.

There was a special ribbon cutting ceremony to kickstart the event, and that was followed by a celebration with food, music and a crowd of nearly 300 to usher in the grand opening of this new state of the art sports complex.

Our ABC7 Sports Dept. spoke with one of the organizers to help bring all of this together and she is filled with joy that this big day is here. “It just means everything,” Alexandra Shakirova, Chief Operating Officer of GSI, said. “Three months ago we couldn’t imagine that this place would be such a huge project for us. Everyone in the community has helped us bring this project together.”

Something else that has others, especially city officials excited is the potential economic impact the Global Sports Institute could have.

“I think it’s going to bring us up to another level,” Kathy Lehner, the President and CEO of the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce said. “The economic impact of not only new businesses wanting to move into this area and be close by. They’re just bringing more people into our community.”

Publix has issued a voluntary recall Tuesday for ground beef products, impacting shoppers on the Suncoast.

The recall affects 13 ground beef products due to “potential foreign material” in the beef that was produced at the Publix in the Jacaranda Commons Shopping Center in Venice on June 18.

Customers can return the beef for a full refund.

It’s the second ground beef recall in three weeks at different locations. You can see the full list of affected products below.

Staff proposes $2.4 billion budget for Manatee County in 2025

Roads, parks and the Lakewood Ranch Library remain priorities in East County.

When the Lakewood Ranch Library celebrated a grand opening in January, there was only one thing missing — a finished second floor.

A $6,919,000 line item in Manatee County’s FY2025 budget says that’s set to change.

The overall Manatee County recommended budget for FY2025 is $2,379,295,263.

Staff members presented their recommendations to commissioners in a series of special work sessions held from June 12 through June 19. The budget won’t be finalized and adopted until September.

"What we've got to do now is balance it," Commissioner Ray Turner said of the budgeting process. "What cuts do we have to make? We have to prioritize a little bit."

Town staff tasked with increasing awareness about bicycle regulations

Longboat Key town commissioners agree current signage about bike rules and speed limits may be ineffective and that more outreach is necessary around e-bikes.

For full article:

https://www.yourobserver.com/news/20...e-regulations/

Town commissioners and staff want people to be more alert on the sidewalks, especially with the prevalence of e-bikes.

At the Longboat Key Town Commission’s June 17 workshop, Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons spoke to the commission about current ordinances regulating bicycles and the use of town sidewalks. Commissioners raised concerns about safety on the sidewalks regarding speeding and spatial awareness.

Residents and visitors use the town’s sidewalks for a variety of reasons like walking dogs or riding bicycles.

According to the town code, bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and “give an audible signal.” Additionally, all bicycles must have a sound operating device, like a bell.

Town sidewalks also have a speed limit of 10 mph per the town code.

Signs are placed along Gulf of Mexico Drive sidewalks about a mile apart and advise sidewalk cyclists of the rules for passing. Now, the town has added an additional sign that more clearly states the 10 mph speed limit.

With the growing popularity of e-bikes, commissioners raised concerns about the e-bike users traveling too fast along the sidewalk, as well as not giving the proper courtesy signal.

“E-bikes are with us and are going to continue to be with us, they’re very popular and getting more popular,” Parsons said.

The e-bikes are grouped into three classes. Class 1 are e-bikes that are pedal-assisted and can travel at a maximum of 20 mph. Class 2 e-bikes also travel a maximum of 20 mph but have a throttle and pedal-assist. Class 3 e-bikes are pedal-assisted and can go a little faster, at 28 mph.

Electric bikes that travel faster than 28 mph are considered mopeds and are not allowed on the sidewalks, according to Parsons.

Parsons said that the use of e-bikes was statutorily preempted in 2020. This means that, according to Florida state statute, e-bikes are afforded the same rights and privileges as regular bicycles.

Though the statute doesn’t prevent local governments from adopting ordinances governing the use of e-bikes, the Florida Department of Transportation told town staff that, since Gulf of Mexico Drive is a state road, the town would be unable to prohibit e-bikes on the sidewalk and state right-of-way.

Bradenton Police are searching for the suspect who is believed to be behind at least two thefts of Amazon packages this week.

The individual rides a black and white scooter/moped and wears a black and red helmet with a black face shield. He wore a USF sweatshirt in both cases. We are not able to identify if the scooter had a license plate.

The cases occurred on different days and the locations were not in the same area.

Days after releasing Ring doorbell security footage, police in Bradenton say they have captured a scooter-riding porch pirate.

Police arrested 18-year-old Skylar Davis of Palmetto in connection with a pair of thefts of Amazon packages.

Skylar was caught on doorbell camera surveillance trying to bring his scooter on to a porch while wearing a helmet and grabbing a package.

The two cases occurred on different days and the locations were not in the same area.

He faces two counts of burglary, and additional charges are pending. We thank the community and local law enforcement partners who helped us identify Davis.

Since October 2000, the Sarasota County Commission has approved 31,814 dwelling units for development in 16 communities located east of Interstate 75, in accord with the establishment of the Sarasota 2050 Plan guidelines, county staff recently reported.

In South County, 4,491 dwelling units have won board approval, as shown in a graphic shown to the commissioners on June 5.

Another 11,236 potentially could be built in North County, the graphic said.

The data was part of a presentation to the commissioners during their regular meeting on June 5. It came in response to inclusion in the board’s 2024 Strategic Action Plan of a request for an analysis of “What’s Left” for the 2050 Plan.

Police recruiters work to fill every sworn position

Law enforcement veterans say Sarasota is an easy sell when recruiting officers for the SPD.

For full article:

Enrique Nazario and Jack Carter like working at the Sarasota Police Department so much that both came out of retirement to draw more officers there.

It isn't a difficult sell, they say. Their job is more about selecting the right candidates than about finding them thanks to the reputation of Florida as a law enforcement-supporting state and the appeal of Sarasota in particular.

Retired military with lengthy second careers in law enforcement, the two of them know well the characteristics they seek in recruits.

Suncoast WaterKeepers are collecting data in Sarasota Bay following a fish kill.

The organization says the hundreds - if not thousands - of dead fish were reported by commercial and recreational fisherman following the “flush” of rains that came through the Suncoast last week.

Abbey Tyrna, Executive Director of the Suncoast WaterKeepers said, “Everyone could do their part by cleaning up after their pets, clearing storm water drains, and cutting back on fertilizing their lawns and plants to keep this from happening.”
