Parking for Fireworks on the Lake event in Sarasota now on sale

For full article:

While you might not expect that shade would be a topic at a fireworks show, Nathan Benderson Park is concerned about just that as it is adding some tents to the grounds for the Fireworks on the Lake Show on July 3.

Gates open at 5 p.m. for the event, which culminates just after 9 p.m. when an approximately 15-minute fireworks show will be fired from a barge on the lake.

While the fireworks will be the highlight of the annual event, there will be plenty of entertainment before the sun goes down, and Nathan Benderson Park Marketing Director Marnie Buchsbaum said park executives have wanted to provide more shade for those who attend the event to get out of the heat.

Last year's Fireworks on the Lake drew 16,000 people and the event continues to grow in popularity.

The overall event will see a change this year as instead of offering multiple bands, Twinkle & Rock Soul Radio will perform a concert that begins at 5:30 p.m. on the main stage on Regatta Island and will last much of the way, besides an intermission, up to the fireworks.

Ten inflatables will be available to kids and interactive photo displays will be around the park for entire families to enjoy. Kids also will enjoy bubble machines and face painters.

Oak and Stone is the event's beer and wine sponsor and plenty of food vendors will be on hand. The event's main sponsor, for the second consecutive year, is Lamborghini of Sarasota. Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is hosting the Kid Zone.

The taped show will be televised July 4 by WWSB ABC 7 beginning at 9 p.m.

Buchsbaum said parking for previous Fireworks on the Lake shows have been close to selling out and suggested that those who want to attend the event secure their parking ahead of time. Parking is now on sale at FireworksontheLake.com. There is no admission charge to enter the park.

Tickets for parking are $35 on Regatta Island, $25 per car and $55 for recreational vehicles in the park's south lot, and $25 for parking at the new special event lot (next to Homewood Suites).

Diverging Diamond Interchange Delayed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BdgTJeTfEE

The Florida Department of Transportation began building a diverging diamond interchange at the intersection of Interstate 75 and Clark Road in 2021.

Although it was scheduled to be completed last year, construction is still ongoing.

One business owner said customers are frustrated with the challenges of getting to her store.

“Customers complain about trying to get here and what a mess it is. I’ve even had people say that they would try to come and it just took so long to get here, like, it would take them 20 minutes to get two miles and they said ‘Forget it I’m going home, I’ll try again tomorrow,’” said Alison Whitley, the president of M.U.G.S Inc.

FDOT blamed hurricanes Ian and Idalia for the delay.

911 Dispatchers in Manatee County now have an even better way to custom-tailor services for each call for help they receive.

On Tuesday, Manatee Telehealth rolled out to reroute non-emergency calls that may come in to the main 911 center. Manatee County Public Safety has partnered with telehealth provider MD Ally to create a more efficient system.

911 Dispatchers will be assessing each call that comes in to best assess needs. Non-emergency calls will be relayed to a professional trained in emergency medicine through telehealth.

Those experts will then conduct virtual visits and be able to provide services on everything from prescriptions and transportation to medical facilities to behavioral health support and community resources.

“We are proud to partner with MD Ally to offer services that meet our community’s needs,” said Deputy Director Of Public Safety James Crutchfield.

As part of the initial rollout, the free service will operate Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Meanwhile, MD Ally partners with Public Safety Systems to expand services which include telehealth. To learn more, visit: mdally.com.

Promenades at Parkside to become Port Charlotte’s ‘downtown’

For full article:

https://winknews.com/2024/06/18/prom...ttes-downtown/

After years of planning, the start of Port Charlotte’s new downtown begins June 21, when part of Promenades Mall, 3280 Tamiami Trail, will be demolished. It will make way for Promenades at Parkside, a walkable neighborhood that will eventually house hundreds of apartments, a boutique hotel, restaurants and offices.

The owner’s representative, Amal Elbahnasawy, said the public is invited to the wrecking ceremony and groundbreaking event at 10 a.m. Sledgehammer-wielding Charlotte County commissioners will strike the first blows to the wall between Fantastic Sams and Le Nails & Spa.

That area will be completely opened and demolished, allowing a walkable pathway with access to storefronts located behind the wall.

VENICE – Two years after the late Frank Cassata and developer Mike Miller bought a controversial 39.6-acre parcel north of Fox Lea Farm Equestrian Center, the Venice Planning Commission will view a proposed plan to build homes there.

The planning advisory board will be asked to approve a change to the zoning on the land for up to three homes per acre. It was annexed in 2008 with Sarasota County's low density Open-Use Estate designation.

The tract is on the southeast corner of Auburn and Border roads and separated from Fox Lea Farm by Fox Lea Drive. The equestrian center is in unincorporated Sarasota County.

How many homes would be built near Fox Lea Farm in Venice?

Meanwhile Miller and the property owner, Auburn Road FC, LLC – which is controlled by Cassata’s heirs and business successors and MPS Development – want to build 60 homes on the site.

That’s slightly more than half of the 118 homes Michigan-based developer Herb Lawson proposed for that site in 2017.

A lot has changed since then, with subsequent site plans for a planned-unit development seeking fewer and fewer homes, with stipulations, ranging from giving prospective buyers notice of the sound and traffic impact of owning a home adjacent to one of Sarasota County’s major sports tourism venues, to prohibitions on flying drones and setting off fireworks.

Land sale ended property rights lawsuit

When the predecessor to Auburn Road FC, LLC bought the property for $3.2 million in 2022, it ended a lawsuit filed by Windham under the state's property rights protection law for a 2018 denial of an plan to build a 105-home subdivision. Mediation attempts failed, even as the proposal shrunk to 85 homes.

Following the sale, Attorney Jeff Boone – who represented Fox Lea in those previous suits – was not successful in an attempt to broker a deal between Fox Lea owner Kimberly Aldrich-Farrell and Cassata and Miller.

Boone is sidelined in these proceedings because of that previous work, with Fox Lea now represented by Morgan Bentley, whose associate Corinna Coser will seek affected party status for Fox Lea in the public hearing.

That status gives Fox Lea as much time as Auburn Road FC to make its case.

The applicant will be represented by Melissa Strassner of Berlin Patten Ebling and Mike Miller’s daughter, Mariah Miller of M.L. Miller Law.

“Big picture, everyone understands that houses will be built there one day, although, frankly, I think a hotel would be better,” Bentley said. “But the issue really is protecting them, protecting us, protecting the future owners.

‘It’s just a unique situation to have an operation – an economic driver as big as Fox Lea Farm – right next door to a fairly small subdivision.”
Venice planning board recommends zoning change for 60-home subdivision near Fox Lea Farm

The Venice Planning Commission recommended that the City Council approve new zoning for a 39.6-acre parcel at the southeast corner Of Auburn and Border roads, with stipulations that would limit the proposed subdivision, Cassata Oaks, to 60 homes.

The recommendation came on a 5-1 vote Tuesday, with Pam Schierberg in dissent, partly because she wanted to see the developer propose a planned-unit development, which would require at least 50% open space.

“I would prefer to see a PUD, 50% open space, appropriate stormwater management put in place and they could be a good neighbor,” Schierberg said.

Planning Commission Chairman Barry Snyder – who attended the meeting virtually – disagreed.

“As far as the PUD goes, that was tried, didn’t work,” Snyder said, referencing several previous attempts by a Michigan-based developer to develop the property. He later noted that the current proposal of 1.5 homes per acre already provided for a significant amount of open space.

Project Pride SRQ is planning a march for the John Ringling Causeway.

“We decided to light the bridge in our own way by having the representation of our flag, all 700 feet of it going over the Ringling Bridge on June 29th,” said Champion.

The walk is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 29.

The local organization claims to have the largest Progressive Pride flag in the nation and says it will be on full display at the end of the month.

“Our movement for quality is not just about LGBTQ+ rights. It is about racially quality, it is about gender equity, and throughout history, the most successful movements for equity have been diverse coalitions. We are trying to invite everyone underneath our tent and just sustain that really vibrant and diverse community,” said Project Pride Executive Director Paul Lotierzo.
