SRQCon hosts all things pop culture at Selby Library

A year ago, Cathy English discovered some exciting news in an email from the local library.

“We were like, ‘Oh, a comic con. We don’t have to go to Tampa,” she said.

On June 8, for the second year in a row, she was present with her grandson Damon Garcia, 9, at SRQCon, Selby Library's annual pop culture event.

Last year, Garcia dressed as Harry Potter, and this year, he came as a Slytherin Quidditch player, a broomstick in hand.

The event saw plenty of cosplayers in attendance and included vendors, authors, local organizations and presenters as well as activities like crafts, an escape room and a costume contest.

The experience gave fellow pop culture fans of the area an opportunity to connect.

“I love it; it’s right in our backyard,” said Heidi Vavrik. “It’s fun to socialize with the other cosplayers, and we get to meet a bunch of new people too.”

It also offered an entertaining experience for families and their children.

“We love the library,” said Daovone Howe. “There’s so much fun stuff to do, and the environment, I feel, is comfortable and safe for the children."

First Alert Weather: Good chance of putting a dent in the drought this week (Video)

For video:

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2024/06/1...outputType=amp

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - All of the stars seem to be in line to bring us some impressive rainfall totals mounting up by the end of the weekend. Deep tropical moisture will be lifting north over the week and interact with a front, which still looks like it will stall just to our north and help ring moisture out of the atmosphere for days in a row. Additionally, little bits of energy will ride along the stalled front helping to produce, at times, some pretty heavy rains this week.

Today will be a transition day, moving us into the setup of heavier rain come Tuesday and Wednesday and into the weekend. As the moisture lifts north a wide rain shield of tropical showers will develop and could lead to at least a few of the days this week turning into something of a washout. At present, each day this week has at least a 5% chance of excessive rainfall leading to minor street flooding. And by the end of the week the rainfall may saturate the ground in places and produce standing water in low lying areas. Mosquitos could become and increasing problem next week.

However, this will be very much needed rain and may have a very positive impact on our current drought conditions.

Authorities are using boats to patrol the ocean and warning swimmers about sharks this weekend along Florida’s Gulf Coast, where a woman and two teenage girls were hurt in two separate shark attacks on Friday.

The attacks off beaches in the Florida Panhandle led authorities to temporarily close several beaches to swimmers on Friday. Beaches were reopened Saturday, with flags warning of high hazards.

"All I can say is that these incidents are very rare," said Demian Chapman, a scientist and director of the Center for Shark Research at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida.

"It’s even more rare to have two events in one day involving three people," he told The Associated Press on Saturday. "That’s astronomically low odds of that happening."

Small fish are traveling in schools near the shore this time of year, which might have been a contributing factor in the attacks, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office said.

There’s no way of knowing whether it was one shark or two separate ones involved in Friday’s attacks, but there are more sharks in the Gulf of Mexico than in past years, Chapman said.

"There’s definitely been a recovery of sharks in the Gulf after many years of overfishing," he said. "They’re sort of out there again after being depleted quite a bit."

A hammerhead shark was caught chasing tarpons eerily close to beachgoers in St. Petersburg on Thursday, just a day before three people were hurt in two separate shark attacks on Florida’s Gulf Coast .

Drone video, captured by kayak company See Through Canoe on June 6, shows the hammerhead chasing tarpons underneath paddleboarders and close to beachgoers in the water as the fish swam near the shore.

“Hammerhead Shark chasing tarpon by people at the beach in St Petersburg,” the company wrote on Facebook . “The shark passed under a couple paddleboarders and some of the tarpon were swimming really close to the shoreline and through people in an effort to avoid the shark. Eventually the shark managed to catch a good sized tarpon.”

The video of the hammerhead shark in St. Pete comes a day before a 45-year-old woman lost part of her arm, and two teens were hurt in two shark attacks about four miles apart in Walton County on Friday.

Opinion - Manatee County Commission Moves Forward with Impact Fee Giveaway

Opinion piece by Dennis "Mitch" Maley - an editor and columnist for The Bradenton Times and the host of their weekly podcast.

For full article:

https://thebradentontimes.com/storie...giveaway,91303

In the first of two public hearings, Manatee County Commissioners moved forward with their plan to significantly underfund infrastructure required by rampant development by collecting far less in impact fees than growth will require.

As we've explained in multiple articles, which you can find at the bottom of this page, Manatee County had the chance to raise development impact fees to a level that, while still not adequate for the cost of growth, would get much closer to what is needed instead of forcing existing residents to subsidize infrastructure required by new development. From the first presentation, it was clear that the county commission, which is stacked with developer lackeys, would not do that.

At Thursday's land use meeting, five board members showed up with a "like-minded" ideology, which amounted to developers should get whatever they want. Staff gave the desired presentation, and the five commissioner majority came with an agreed-upon narrative—the county lacks the data and likely the validity to invoke a process that would allow them to collect twice as much impact fees.

Commissioner Amanda Ballard, who is an attorney, made her usual effort to intellectualize whatever graft was being passed off, and the rest of the majority agreed that the county would be at risk of being sued by developers if they did not do what the developers that bought the commissioners' seats wanted them to. With the help of Sarah Schenk of the Manatee County Attorney's office, they managed to present what probably seemed like a reasonable case to the uninitiated.

Fortunately, Commissioner George Kruse, who is the only commissioner on the board who is not in the pocket of developers, was the best-prepared participant at the meeting. Kruse once again schooled his fellow board members and the public as to why the narrative was deeply flawed and how detrimental woefully underfunding infrastructure would surely be. You can see that portion of the meeting below:

A haven for haircuts

https://www.newsbreak.com/north-port...n-for-haircuts

NORTH PORT — A haircut can be a terrifying experience for some people with special needs.

The crowd of people, the sounds of hair dryers and clippers, the chatter, music or TV sounds can be overwhelming for someone on the autism spectrum, especially young people.

Because of that, Studio 51 Barbershop at 2573 Toledo Blade Blvd., North Port, has unveiled a brand-new intimate room for those with special needs to get their hair cut.

A door separates the room from the busy barbershop in the next room. And within the safe haven lies items of comfort to soothe nerves that may come to light from new people and noises.

Coloring books, fidget toys, the rooms' own television, and a bubbling tower filled with toy fish fill the safe space.

“So many kids ask not to come back after struggling at other barber shops," said Kyrie McCalmont, the new locations manager. "We need to do better in this industry.”

Such people falling through the cracks breaks her heart. She believes everyone should be excited to get their haircut.

And Studio 51 hopes that the new room will help people with disabilities such as autism in doing so.

The new shop has another location at 14906 Tamiami Trail, next to Taco Bell and Burger King that has been there for more than a decade. The company aspires to give back again this summer.

They have started preliminary plans to work with Riddle & Rhymes Academy, a daycare next to the new Toledo Blade location, this summer.
