https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/sa...1ebbfec9&ei=72

Sarasota County has contracted with Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, for resurfacing portions of Siesta Key.

The construction of Resurfacing Siesta Key is part of a Sarasota County-wide roadway resurfacing program. The project includes milling and paving, pavement stripping, Americans with Disabilities Act ramp modifications, curb repairs, roadway base repairs and school zone sign improvements.

Construction began May 23, with an estimated completion of January 2025. Construction will occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding weekends and holidays.

Motorists may experience lane closures and should seek alternate routes whenever possible. Emergency vehicles will have unrestricted access at all times. Pedestrians and motorists should use caution while traveling through the area and expect minor delays.

Door hangers with details about construction will be placed at residences in advance of individual street resurfacing. For more information, please visit scgov.net or call 311.

Complete streets projects await federal grant approval

Drawing such a crowd that the formal presentation on May 23 had to be repeated, the city of Sarasota’s transportation planning staff laid out concepts and plans now at the 60% design stage for complete street projects on 10th Street and Boulevard of the Arts.

As one standing-room-only group heard from Senior Transportation Planner Corinne Arriaga, waiting in the wings was a second equally sized crowd, shuffling between display boards and speaking with staff in the anteroom of the SRQ Media Studio at City Hall.

“The origins of this project came from Sarasota In Motion, the first ever citywide transportation master plan,” Arriaga said. “It prioritizes transportation decisions to provide safe and diverse choices, and it acts as a guideline for transportation investments. Tenth Street and Boulevard the Arts were both in the top 10 priorities.”

Ranked second was 10th Street and Boulevard of the Arts No. 10, but because both projects are in the Rosemary District and in close proximity, both were advanced together as a single project that, in an effort to minimize construction fatigue, will be divided into four phases.

District 72 candidate Richard Green hopes to mix things up

For full article:

https://www.yourobserver.com/news/20...richard-green/

Green said he understands how important balancing development and agricultural concerns will be. His district contains Lakewood Ranch and much of eastern Manatee County, which is where the county's agricultural base is located. Green said he wants changes in the legislature to help farmers and ranchers not be forced to sell their land because they can't make a living.

He will be facing former Manatee County Planning Commission Chairman Bill Conerly, AG Creative founder Alyssa Gay and Manatee County School Board Member Richard Tatem in the primary.

Democrat Lesa Miller will oppose the winner of the primary in the general election.

Green, 39, said that he is somewhat of an unknown commodity in the local political arena and that is fine. He said District 72 doesn't need more candidates who only want to be career politicians.

A New Mural Is Headed to Gulfstream Avenue in Downtown Sarasota

Local artist Truman Adams’ mural, “Amphitrite,” is the first in the Florida Legacy Art Mural series, spearheaded by the City of Sarasota’s public art committee.

Along with the numerous downtown projects taking root, the city’s public art collection is expanding, too. Amphitrite, a mural featuring the Greek goddess of the sea, is the first in a series that will see five total murals go up in the City of Sarasota.

Amphitrite is the first in the Florida Legacy Art Series, funded by the recently established Public Art Program within the City of Sarasota’s Public Art Fund. For extra water connection cred, Amphitrite is also one of the 50 Nereids, the sea nymph children of the sea gods Nereus and Doris and the granddaughters of the titan Oceanus. One of Amphitrite’s earliest iterations is painted on a pot dated between 500-490 B.C. and displayed at the Louvre in Paris, France.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating two serious crashes that killed one person and injured two others in Manatee and Sarasota counties on Friday.

In the first accident, a 39-year-old man's vehicle collided with a car driven by an 86-year-old woman near a Sarasota assisted living facility at 10 a.m. Friday. The Sarasota woman was traveling west from the driveway access of Brookdale Philippi Creek at 5501 Swift Road when the FHP said she turned left in front of an oncoming car.

The woman sustained critical injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The driver of the other vehicle had minor injuries, according to the FHP.

A crash in Manatee County killed a 28-year-old motorcyclist Friday night. A van driven by a 64-year-old man was traveling west in the westbound left turn lane of Cortez Road West at 8:42 p.m., approaching the intersection of 51st Street West and turned left in front of a motorcycle heading east.

The motorcyclist and a 27-year-old female passenger, both of Virginia, were knocked off and were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The motorcyclist was later pronounced dead.

FHP is continuing to investigate both crashes.

The new branch will open in 2025, according to President Drayton Saunders. An exact location in Wellen Park was not immediately available.
