Several police agencies from the Tampa Bay area gathered to honor 31 K9 officers at the Nam Knights Regional K9 Memorial at the Temple Terrace Police Department for National Police Week.

Officers placed a rose on top of the Law Enforcement K9 Memorial statue in honor of their K9 officers who have worked alongside their handlers.

Bradenton Police Department honored K9 Riggs, who served for ten years before retiring in 2020.

Riggs passed away in 2022 from cancer with his now-retired partner, Officer Palmer, by his side.

“We will never forget K9 Riggs’ service,” says the Bradenton Police Department.

Manatee County Commissioners invited the fire chiefs across the county to a meeting on April 23 where commissioners discussed the possibility of consolidating the fire districts across the county.

According to the meeting and a question asked by chair Mike Rahn, the commission has no control over the fire districts merging.

“County commissioners, they come up with this probably every five to ten years they come up with this question,” said Ben Rigney, the Fire Chief for West Manatee Fire Rescue.

Rigney said the idea of consolidation is about safety and to make sure each fire district is serving their community to the best of its abilities.

Commissioner George Kruse said that would be easier with a merge between districts.

“It’s more the equipment. We have some fire districts have four ladder trucks. Some have zero. Odds are the one with the four ladder trucks never needs four ladder trucks at the same time but on occasion, the one with zero ladder trucks may need one. Especially when they start building the four-story apartment complex’s we’ve approved up here,” said Kruse.

According to commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge, the reason for the discussion stemmed from Duette Fire District who wanted to reach Advanced Life Support status, or ALS. He said for them to receive services like that, they would have to merge.

Fire Chief Rocky Parker has been with the Duette Fire and Rescue station in Duette for 7 years, and a chief since 2023. He is against the consolidation and says that he doesn't believe that this is a true conservative approach.

The Duette Fire & Rescue Station has 7 paramedics in a volunteer team of 40.

One of the recent investments Parker has made in technology was the purchase of defibrillators that cost the station $80,000.

He says he purchased this equipment, among other things, in order to use during calls.

The department had these devices for two years now, but is unable to use them because the county hasn’t given them a permit to apply for their Advanced Life Support permit.

“The county kind of declared that we weren’t even barely qualified to provide this service. That’s not true; the state really determines that,” he said.

The fire chief has put out everything that the Duette Fire Rescue Station has provided for the ALS permit according to the Manatee County Ordinance 17-041 on their Facebook page:

Experts warn Florida renters to schedule Milestone inspections as deadline approaches

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSNOBfCixhs

Deadlines for the new State of Florida Milestone inspections are quickly approaching, experts say if you have not already scheduled yours it might be too late.

If you live in a condo building three stories or taller, with four or more units and its 30th birthday is this year, mark your calendars.

That is because there is a new state milestone inspection and the deadline is the last day of the year.

These milestone inspections are necessary to make sure you live in a structurally sound building.

“Safeguard the asset which is the living spaces and also life safety," UES Director of Milestone Inspections Mike Santiago said.

State officials hope this new requirement will prevent another tragedy from happening, like the Surfside condo collapse, which killed 98 people in 2021.

Potential relief for local businesses as Florida nears marijuana legalization vote

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdsXGCtNJq8

The federal government is one step closer to acknowledging that marijuana should not be treated as severely as drugs like LSD or heroin. This reclassification could mean significant changes for individuals and businesses alike, reducing the risk of legal repercussions for marijuana use.

As Florida gears up for a vote on marijuana legalization in November, federal efforts to reclassify the drug could have far-reaching effects, particularly for businesses such as Seed and Bean Coffeeshop in downtown Fort Myers.
