Motorist survives dramatic pile-up — at the bottom

For photo:

Tonja Peters was just minding her business at the corner of Albee Road and Tamiami Trail around noon Friday in Nokomis.

Then, in the span of seconds, she watched a chain reaction of crashes that left a white Kia on top of her car.

"I saw what happened," a calm Peters said Friday, standing on the roadside by the accident scene. "Yes, you could definitely say I saw what happened."

As she sat at the light, she saw the white Kia trying to turn from Tamiami Trail onto Albee Road. A white work van traveling on Tamiami Trail in the oppposte direction slammed into the Kia as it turned.

The crash had such force that the work van pushed the car on top of Peters' automobile.

She said the two people in the car on top of her were taken to the hospital as a precaution, adding that the passenger in the car appeared to already be using an oxygen tank.

Peters said she was fine, as people around her remarked how calm she was.

"What else can I do?" she said, smiling. "That's why they call it an accident."

Since 2009, nonprofit organization Night With The Stars Prom, Inc. has helped Sarasota and Manatee County residents of all abilities, ages 16 and up, to enjoy a fabulous – and free – prom. This year’s event, themed “Night at the ‘50s,” is taking place April 19th at Woodland Community Church in Bradenton.

There are expected to be over 450 guests and caregivers in attendance.

Night With The Stars Prom is a nonprofit organization run solely by volunteers. Everything for the prom is donated by companies and members of surrounding communities, from the red carpet at the entryway to the decorations, desserts, table service, music, and photos.

The volunteers ensure that suits and prom dresses – with accessories – are available at no charge for those guests who attend special try-on events, and alterations are also provided. There are also individuals who donate their time and talent by doing hair and makeup for the guests.

This year, Goodwill Manasota became involved in the effort, donating 45 gift cards to its retail stores so that prom guests could shop for clothing, shoes and accessories.

On Friday night, 450 guests and their caretakers attended the Night With The Stars Prom at Woodland Community Church. Doors opened at 6:30 p.m. for the 13th annual event.

The event is free and for community members ages 16 and older of all abilities. The prom is put on entirely by volunteers which included a dance floor, karaoke, and a red-carpet entryway.

President for Night With The Stars Prom, Mary Ann McDevitt, said the prom helps create lasting memories for individuals with disabilities.

“Some of them don’t get to go to their own prom. Whether they feel self-conscious or whether they feel that they are not included, they don’t go to their prom. So, this prom happening help them find a place to go that’s theirs,” said McDevitt.

The doors closed at 10 p.m. and McDevitt said many times they are having to kick out attendees because they don’t want the fun to end. She said it’s a fun time that people are excited for each year.

Hate all the hassle involved with trying to see your favorite band in concert? So does Barry Weisblatt. That’s why the live entertainment and event production veteran recently launched WhiteLeaf Private Concert Club in Sarasota.

“I’m trying to restore some degree of civility back into the experience,” says Weisblatt, 59. “I’m exhausted by traveling to a show, getting accosted by the security, getting mishandled by ushers and box office people, getting overcharged for bad food and beer, and then getting to my seat only to find that I’m surrounded by a bunch of drunk idiots who are screaming the lyrics in the back of my ears while I’m trying to listen to the artist.”

Roofing company gives high school students taste of industry

For full article:

A Sarasota County roofing company is paving the way for students to enter its workforce.

Sutter Roofing, based off Fruitville Road, hosted nearly 50 students from Riverview High School’s construction technology program on Friday to introduce them to the company and industry as a whole.

“One of the best things about this industry is it’s tangible — you get to see what you worked on at the end of every day,” Sutter Roofing President Doug Sutter says. “If you’re just shuffling papers around a desk, you don’t get that. Roofing is just a great industry.”

In fact, he says that roofing was a $198 billion industry in 2023 and is projected to grow to $344 billion by 2033. “The roofing industry is growing and it’s a stable industry,” Sutter says. “Everybody knows you’ve got to have a roof over your head.”

The review process for a new 355-unit apartment complex along U.S. 301 is being fast-tracked by Manatee County Government.

The development is planned just south of the Amazon distribution center at 2200 Tallevast Road, east of 21st Street East. At least 10%, or 36, of the apartment units would be classified as affordable, Bill Logan, the county's information outreach director, said in response to questions from the Bradenton Herald.

The application for the project, identified as "Greystar Introduction — SRQ Residential," is for a combined preliminary site plan, final site plan and construction plan approval.

Affordable housing should cost no more than 30% of a resident's income for rent or mortgage payments. Due to the shortage of affordable housing in the Bradenton area, Manatee County Government prioritizes the processing of affordable housing developments.

Greystar, based in Charleston, South Carolina, already has a significant presence in Manatee County. Some of its apartment complexes include Summerhouse Lakewood Ranch, 11716 18th Place E., Lakewood Ranch, The Point at Bella Grove, 8310 Bella Grove Circle, Sarasota, and The Pointe at Lakewood Ranch, 8925 77th Terrace E., Lakewood Ranch.

Greystar Introduction — SRQ Residential is planned on a portion of a 131-acre parcel owned by SRQ 300 LLC of Tampa.

Peak Development Partners, LLC is listed as the registered agent for SRQ 300 LLC.

Peak Development has been involved with much of the recent development in the Tallevast area.

Those projects include the Amazon facility and United Natural Foods, Inc., which announced in August that it was breaking ground on a new distribution center within the SRQ Logistics Center, a 300-acre master-planned business park south of Tallevast Road.

Other affordable housing projects

Other affordable housing projects in the works, as previously reported by the Bradenton Herald, include:

Tallevast community developments and conference

For full article:

New housing development may be coming to Tallevast on US 301, a historically Black, unincorporated community in Manatee County, according to The Bradenton Herald. The company listed on the Manatee County Parcel is SRQ 300 LLC, with the limited liability company listed as Peak Development Parking, LLC.

Peak Development has been behind the development of the Amazon facility also by US 301, and the creation of a planned business park called the SRQ Logistics Center. Manatee County’s Information Outreach Director Bill Logan told the Bradenton Herald that at least 10 percent of the housing units would be considered affordable housing.

Greystar, which is the company listed on the preliminary site plan, is the largest apartment manager in the United States as of 2023. Greystar has an established presence in Bradenton and Sarasota, with properties scattered throughout, as well as in the wider Tampa Bay area.

Tallevast has a history of being harmed by companies such as Lockheed Martin, which reportedly contaminated the town’s water supply from 1996 to 2003 through its beryllium plant. As a result, Tallevast residents have been skeptical of developments in the area.

On April 20 from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., the public is invited to “From Contamination to Cleanup and Beyond,” a conference celebrating Tallevast’s efforts to resist and to redevelop on its own terms. The conference will take place at the Selby Auditorium, University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

Registration for this free, open event is required and can be found here:

https://usf.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/fo...eRHv0?Q_CHL=qr

The conference features a keynote address by Carlton Eley, senior director for federal strategies at Race Forward and a former specialist at the federal Office of Environmental Justice, plus a plenary address by Deanna Wathington, president-elect of the American Public Health Association.

Organizer Professor Christian Wells of the Department of Anthropology at USF Tampa had this to say in an announcement about the conference: “For over 20 years, community residents have had to contend with groundwater contamination, brownfields, and an uncertain future.

With recent funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the community is now organizing for change. This conference will share the outcomes of 20 years of research on the contamination, health outcomes, cleanup process, and redevelopment planning.”

Holmes Beach treehouse battle could be coming to an end (Video)

For video:

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2024/04/1...outputType=amp

After a long back and forth between the courts, a battle that has been going on for years over a “treehouse” in Holmes Beach could soon be over.

The battle over this treehouse in Holmes Beach has been going on for 12 years. It sits near the beach on the Angelinos Sea Lodge, which is owned by Lyn Tran and Richard Hazen.

The city has been pushing to have it torn down and a 12th Judicial Circuit Court judge recently agreed, ordering it to be demolished.

Legal battles to keep it have cost Tran and Hazen hundreds of thousands of dollars. Tran says they are now ready to bring the treehouse down.

She says there are going through the process of getting demolition plans and permits to have it removed.

Tran told ABC7 the treehouse was built in 2011 and it cost them $28,000 to build.

Westbound and Down: 'Smokey and the Bandit' car heads to auction this weekend

For full article & photos:

https://www.fox13news.com/news/westb...is-weekend.amp

If you were around in 1977, you know about the iconic movie "Smokey and the Bandit."

Burt Reynolds and Sally Field led sheriff Buford T. Justice, played by Jackie Gleason, on a wild chase across the South.

People loved the characters and they loved The Bandit's car. It was a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am, and it became an instant classic for car lovers.

A few years before he died in 2018, Burt Reynolds bought a Trans Am and had it restored to look just like the one in the movie. His friend Gene Kennedy, owner of Bandit Movie Cars of Florida in Palmetto, restored the car.

"He wanted decal placement, radios, the Pace CB, all those kinds of things to be just like it was in the movie so that when somebody saw the car it was correct," says Kennedy.

In his later years, the car was with Reynolds for personal appearances. Kennedy's company took the Trans Am, along with Smokey's car, to car shows all over the country.
