This article mentions that only 75% of staff is vaccinated at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. That is kind of surprising to me.

Sarasota-Manatee medical experts talk about COVID-19 challenges, progress

To look at Florida’s COVID-related hospitalizations in 2020 and 2021 is jarring.

2020 marked the first year of the pandemic, a year of lockdowns and masks and no vaccinations. 2021 had vaccinations and the Delta variant — at first, things seemed on track to slow down. Sarasota Memorial Hospital staff rejoiced in early June. There were only three COVID-19 cases in the hospital, and none were in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the hospital’s infectious disease specialist, Dr. Manuel Gordillo.

Florida’s COVID-19 surge in the summer of 2020 hit a peak of more than 10,000 hospitalizations. This year, that number has nearly doubled — 2021’s surge peak thus far has already hit roughly 17,000, according to numbers from the Florida Hospital Association.

Have tickets to a show in Tampa Bay? Better check COVID requirements.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/othe...nts/ar-AAOxMiJ

There’s no sign of ticket sales for concerts and events slowing despite the delta variant’s hold on Florida. Audiences are ready to venture out, but what should they expect when headed to a show in Tampa Bay?

Pfizer/BioNTech say data show COVID-19 vaccine safe and protective in kids

https://www.reuters.com/business/hea...ds-2021-09-20/

Sept 20 (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and BioNTech SE said on Monday their COVID-19 vaccine induced a robust immune response in 5 to 11 year olds, and they plan to ask for regulatory authorization as soon as possible to use the shot in children in that age range in the United States, Europe and elsewhere.

The companies said their two-dose vaccine generated an immune response in the 5-to-11 year olds in a Phase II/III clinical trial that matched what was previously observed in 16-to-25 year olds. The safety profile was also generally comparable to the older age group, they added.

"These trial results provide a strong foundation for seeking authorization of our vaccine for children 5 to 11 years old, and we plan to submit them to the FDA and other regulators with urgency," Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla said in a news release.

Top U.S. health officials believe regulators could make a decision on whether the shot is safe and effective in younger children within three weeks of the companies submitting a request for authorization, two sources told Reuters this month. A rapid authorization could help mitigate a potential surge of cases this fall, with schools already open nationwide.

US to ease travel restrictions on fully vaccinated foreign visitors

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

The United States plans to ease travel restrictions on all fully vaccinated foreign visitors starting in November, the White House said Monday, relaxing a patchwork of bans that had begun to cause fury in Europe and replacing them with more uniform requirements for inbound international air passengers.

Johnson & Johnson says additional dose boosts Covid vaccine efficacy

https://www.statnews.com/2021/09/21/...cine-efficacy/

Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday that a large, global study showed its Covid-19 vaccine is more effective when given as a two-dose regimen, and that other data indicate the efficacy of the vaccine does not wane.

The two-dose regimen prevented 75% of moderate to severe Covid cases in all countries where it was tested — and 94% of such cases in the United States, where fewer troublesome variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus circulated at the time the trial was underway. Importantly, the two-dose regimen was 100% effective against severe disease.

It appears J&J may use the data to argue in favor of making a booster broadly available to people who received the one-dose vaccine six months ago or more. A press release from the company did not say so explicitly, but stated J&J had submitted the data to the Food and Drug Administration and plans to submit them to other regulators and the World Health Organization.

This Calculator Estimates Your Risk of Catching COVID-19 During Everyday Activities

https://news.yahoo.com/calculator-es...170311980.html

You've made it through countless lockdowns, changing mandates, quarantines, testing, and vaccines. Now, it's time to decide if you're ready to reenter the world once again. Still feeling a little hesitant to be out and about? This new COVID-19 risk calculator could help.

The MicroCOVID project released a new calculator that can "quantitatively estimate the COVID risk to you from your ordinary daily activities."

"We trawled the scientific literature for data about the likelihood of getting COVID from different situations, and combined the data into a model that people can use," the scientists behind the project explain on their website. "We estimate COVID risk in units of microCOVIDs, where one microCOVID = a one-in-a-million chance of getting COVID."

The aim of the calculator is not to scare you, but rather to "help hone your intuition, lower your stress levels, and figure out good harm-reduction strategies."

How to Use the microCOVID Calculator

Biden bets on rapid COVID tests but they can be hard to find

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/bi...ind/ar-AAOFqLH

President Joe Biden is betting on millions more rapid, at-home tests to help curb the latest deadly wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is overloading hospitals and threatening to shutter classrooms around the country.

But the tests have already disappeared from pharmacy shelves in many parts of the U.S., and manufacturers warn it will take them weeks to ramp up production, after scaling it back amid plummeting demand over the summer.

The latest shortage is another painful reminder that the U.S. has yet to successfully manage its COVID-19 testing arsenal, let alone deploy it in the type of systematic way needed to quickly crush outbreaks in schools, workplaces and communities.

To make rapid tests more affordable big retailers like Wal-Mart and Kroger have agreed to sell them at a 35% discount for the next three months. But the cheapest test — Abbott’s BinaxNOW — would still sell for about $15 for a two-pack, out of reach for some families looking to frequently test themselves.

Other tests will cost $35 or more even after the discount.

Covid vaccines are less popular than monoclonal antibodies in some places. Here's why.

https://news.google.com/articles/CBM...S&ceid=US%3Aen

Many people who oppose taking Covid-19 vaccines have cited concerns over the risks of using new technology to deal with a disease. But many of them are flocking to hospitals after having contracted Covid to get infusions of monoclonal antibodies — also a new technology to deal with a disease. This may seem like a paradox, but it isn’t a mystery. This tale of two technologies shows that vaccine hesitancy isn’t simply fear of new inventions but often a symptom of retrograde ideology.
