Well here's an explanation from The Miami Herald about the new way that the FDOH & the CDC report cases and deaths.

Florida COVID update: 20,656 new cases and 357 deaths — one of the highest death increases

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/med...ses/ar-AANg8dI

Florida on Wednesday reported 20,656 more COVID-19 cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state also reported 357 new deaths.

The jump in cases and deaths are a sum of many changes to previous daily totals the CDC made Thursday.

The CDC has changed the way it reports cases and deaths in Florida. It now publishes cases and deaths based on the date of occurrence — instead of the date that it was reported to the agency.

The reason is due to the Florida Department of Health submitting a complete renewed set of case data to the CDC everyday, including retrospective COVID-19 cases, Weesam Khoury, the Florida DOH communications director, told the Miami Herald.

“This will ensure that continuous epidemiological analyses provide the most updated data to the public,” Khoury said.

The Herald is still presenting daily totals as the difference between cumulative total of new cases from one day to the next.

As numerous daily totals were changed, Florida’s new highest single day increase of cases was on Wednesday with 24,869 cases. However that total may change in future just as Tuesday’s original daily total of 24,753, which at the time was the highest single day record, lowered to 20,465 on Thursday when the CDC posted its newest data.

Florida’s cumulative increase of 357 deaths on Thursday made up of changes on many days in the past was the highest in pandemic history. It is unclear if this large increase is due to the addition of outside factors, such as non-resident deaths or a backlog of not yet reported deaths on past dates.

Florida — which makes up about 6.5% of the U.S. population, accounted for 15.7% of the country’s new cases on Wednesday— based on data the state is reporting to the CDC. As of Aug. 11, the state’s seven-day moving average of new cases was 21,210, up from a moving average of 4,072 on July 11. That number represents roughly a 421% increase, stemming from the highly contagious delta variant.

Manatee shuts down all libraries due to COVID-19 outbreak, staffing shortages

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

One day after a COVID-19 outbreak among employees forced the Manatee Downtown Central Library to be shut down, county officials announced a plan to temporarily close all locations.

The county’s other five library branches were scheduled to close at their regular times Thursday, and then be closed until at least Aug. 23, according to County Administrator Scott Hopes.

Just this week, there were six employees at the Central Library who tested positive and another 16 staffers who were exposed to them. Contact tracing is underway in an effort to inform visitors who may have been exposed to library employees.

“There weren’t enough staff because we had so many in quarantine, either having COVID or because of exposure,” said Hopes, explaining that the county didn’t have enough healthy workers available to keep the location open.

It was not immediately known what library patrons should do if they think they came in contact with a library staffer.

Since May 3, the county has had 77 employees who have tested positive for the coronavirus — 19 of whom have been vaccinated. The library system’s temporary shutdown comes as the virus’ delta variant continues to drive a record-breaking surge of COVID-19 cases in Florida.

Manatee schools to roll out COVID safety measures after 36 cases reported first 2 days
Manatee schools plan COVID safety measures after seeing more than 100 cases in first 3 days

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.bra...253438469.html

In the first three days of classes, the Manatee County School District reported more than 100 COVID-19 cases among students and employees, more than were reported the entire first week last year. Last year, the district reported a total of 17 cases for the entire first week of school.

On Thursday morning, Superintendent Cynthia Saunders sent an email to district staff and School Board members, calling for more safety measures in the coming week after reporting there were 36 cases the first two days.

“I would like to institute all protocols we had in place last year, except the mandated mask,” Saunders wrote, emphasizing that masks would remain voluntary. “However, we will strongly encourage mask and vaccinations for all that apply, since those are individual choice decisions.”

That news was followed by an even bigger report of new infections on the district’s third day of classes. On Thursday afternoon, the school district confirmed that 76 additional people, including students and staff, had tested positive COVID-19 on the third day. The cases were dispersed among 23 school campuses as well at Manatee Technical College and two district offices.

The recommendations, along with a reminder to keep children home when sick, will go out to families through the Connect-ED messaging system. And according to Saunders’ email, she also hoped to roll out the following safety measures:

- Temperature checks for employees and visitors (the district also announced random checks for students later in the day).

- Plastic dividers in elementary schools and cafeterias where possible.

- A daily COVID-19 questionnaire for employees when they arrive to work.

“I need this up and going quickly,” the superintendent said in Thursday’s email. “Should have all in place by Monday, if not sooner.”

In a separate news release Thursday afternoon, the district said those measures would go into effect immediately, along with several others:

- Send home students and employees who are sick.

- Reinforce and practice proper hand-washing techniques among students and staff.

- Provide and encourage the use of hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

- Deep clean and disinfect schools and school buses daily, or in-between uses as needed.

- Make every effort to social distance in schools.

- Require masks for district employees who visit a school other than their own during the school day.

- Limit nonessential visitors and volunteers to school campuses.

- Strongly encourage the use of masks when indoors.

- Strongly encourage eligible people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

COVID, delta variant & burnout fueling crisis. 68% of Florida hospitals expect to hit critical staff shortage

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/med...age/ar-AANhuS6

Florida hospitals are near a breaking point as COVID-19 patients fill intensive care units and spill into other units while stretched-thin staff struggle to keep burnout at bay.

By next week, 68% of hospitals expect to reach a critical staffing shortage, according to an Aug. 9 survey conducted twice weekly by the Florida Hospital Association.

The figure climbed 8 percentage points from four days earlier on Aug. 5, which signals how rapidly the situation is deteriorating as the delta variant continues its sweep across the hard-hit state.

Florida consistently has been the top one or two states with the highest number of new cases. Hospitalizations hit 15,796 Thursday and are climbing, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Willa Fuller, executive director of the Orlando-based Florida Nurses Association, said the pandemic has exacerbated the ongoing nursing shortage. But now more hospital nurses may be nearing wits' end and quit because of the delta variant.

“They get all the praise about being brave health care heroes, but they are not bulletproof,” Fuller said. “Now that this (delta variant) has hit, they are already fatigued. So now you are looking at people fatigued on top of fatigue.”

FDA authorizes third dose of Pfizer, Moderna shots for immunocompromised

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

The FDA updated its emergency-use authorizations for the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines on Thursday, sanctioning third doses for a small percentage of Americans with compromised immune systems.

The broadened EUAs specifically permit solid-organ transplant patients or people with other conditions "that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise" to access additional doses, the agency said in a press release.

Woodcock emphasized that people whose immune systems are not compromised — the vast majority of Americans — do not need additional vaccine doses.

The agency's action is intended to help people who may not have gotten adequate protection from the initial two-dose Pfizer or Moderna regimen due to their conditions. It comes as the virus' Delta variant spurs a surge of Covid cases nationwide.

It does not apply to recipients of Johnson & Johnson's single-dose vaccine, though federal officials believe that very few immunocompromised people got that shot given the timing of its rollout compared to when many of those patients were allowed to get inoculated during the late-winter vaccination campaign. Data from the company's two-dose trial have yet to be released.

More than 800 doctors sign letter criticising DeSantis over school mask rules

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

A group of more than 800 doctors signed a letter calling on Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida to repeal an executive order he issued prohibiting local officials from requiring students to wear masks when they return to school.

The doctors claimed in their letter that Mr DeSantis' order "exposes every child to a virus that is deadlier than the flu, as contagious as smallpox and preventable with two basic mitigation measures: mask use and vaccinations”.

"What's heartbreaking and infuriating for us as doctors is watching children needlessly suffer while Gov DeSantis rejects simple protections such as masks and vaccinations," the doctors said.

Fact-checking Dr. Stock’s COVID-19 claims at the Mt. Vernon school board meeting

An Indiana doctor’s comments about COVID-19 and vaccines at a school board meeting were inaccurate and misleading, according to fact-checkers.

https://www.wthr.com/article/news/ve...9-fadc92a0016d

At an August 6 school board meeting in Hancock County, Dr. Dan Stock spoke out against mandatory COVID-19 vaccination and mask policies. While addressing board members during the public comment portion of the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation meeting, the doctor made several claims about the COVID-19 virus and vaccines that are contrary to information and recommendations cited by the CDC and Indiana State Department of Health.

Clips from the board meeting have gone viral, posted across mainstream and non-mainstream channels. On YouTube, the video from the entire school board meeting had more than 580,000 views, as of Aug. 11, and a 7-minute clip of Stock speaking at the meeting had more than 720,000 YouTube views. The posts have garnered more than 92 million Facebook engagements, according to the non-profit research organization Media Matters for America.

The engagements include a post from Indiana Rep. John Jacob. Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan also shared a YouTube link on Facebook.

VERIFY broke down some of Stock’s claims used as evidence against mandatory vaccinations and mask mandates.
