That's the worst time to be driving in the South Bay. The traffic at 6 pm is threefold worse than it is at 4 pm. At that time of day, yes, Central is a good alternative.

Yea I agree 101 and 85 seem horrible!!

237 seems fine. I just spent the last 1 month living in Mountain View, I took 237 to sunnyvale and that went really smooth. All the traffic was on the other side (west bound)

I do that stretch of 237 twice a week on the way to Los Altos (237 to Grant, then Cuesta). I agree, it moves really well. You just have to watch that 101 interchange, very dangerous merge.
