We're just a few days away from our move to San Jose and about to pack our suitcases. Most of our stuff will be shipped and arrive in a couple of months.

I'm wondering what to pack in terms of the temperature there. Does it cool down at night? Should I just go for all summer weight things, or should I pack a jacket or fleece for the evening?

It gets cool at night, and if you want to wander to the beach or San Francisco that jacket will come in handy.

It can get *really* hot during the day in SJ (upper 90s) and have it be in the lower 60s at 11PM.

*Layers* is the magic word.

So : wear a T-shirt. If you're cool, put a long-sleeved Tee or a light jacket over that. If you head to the beach (where it can be 65 when it's 90 in SJ) bring a cotton sweater and a light wind-breaker. If you get warm, you take off a layer. You get cold, you add a layer. You'll be wearing Tshirts (or polos) more often than anything else (unless you head to the beach or SF, where it is often 65 up there when it's 90 down here in SJ).

It's fairly common for myself to leave SJ in shorts and a Tshirt, park in SF and change into pants and put on a jacket.

Definitely pack an assortment. You won't need snow boots, but you'll be glad you packed some fleece for evenings or outings to cooler areas, as everyone has said.

At least you don't have to worry about rain this time of year.

Thanks for the advice. We are here now and COLD in the evenings! We need to adjust from Japan where it's hot and humid 24/7 during the summer months. So many people going around in shorts in San Jose, I always feel like they must be cold but I think we just need to acclimatize. My son who's on the thin side is feeling it the most, and in the rush of our move nothing warm got packed for him in our luggage. I can't find long sleeved things in the shops here, any ideas?

I'd be surprised if you couldn't find some inexpensive long-sleeved tees at Target to tide you over for a month or two. It might have some horrible picture or advert on it, but it'll keep him warm.

Or you could go to a thrift shop (like goodwill) and get used clothing. It *is* just to help you get through a month or two until all of your stuff is shipped, right?
