Hi everyone,

I recently started working in Santa Clara and living in Mountain View. The commute is awesome (traffic goes mostly the opposite direction). But Mountain View is too expensive. I am now paying slightly over $1,600 for a 1br with all the utilities, although the place is nice. The rent is raising even more for next year, around $150/month more. That's too much for me.

I would like to move somewhere cheaper. I am looking into Union City and Fremont, because most of my friends live in the East Bay. Here is what I am looking for:

1) Cheaper place, possibly under $1400 with everything
2) Covered, gated parking
3) Commute to Santa Clara that is not awful
4) Safe

I don't care so much what is around because the truth here is that you have to drive anyway.

Do you have any advice/opinion?

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Sunnyvale is currently almost as expensive as mountain view, not worth the move. Campbell and west San Jose look more reasonably priced. Will look into these more. Any advice for west San Jose? Areas to avoid or something.

Thanks

Many affordable choices from the area around Diridon Station to Bascom Avenue, mostly south of West San Carlos.

If you see west side or "Campbell" apartments around Magliocco or Eden, steer clear.. the apartments around Budd in Campbell are, as far as I know, ok.

why don't you move to Santa Clara. It's cheaper than MV by about $200-$300/month across the board.

Fremont is generally a good area, but you would have a rush hour commute going in and out.
