I would agree that the air quality in San Jose is definitely worse than in San Diego. I lived in San Diego for ten years and there was almost no bad air quality except for remote, sparsely populated inland areas. Most of that area enjoys a sea breeze. San Jose traps in smog because of the mountains all around it.

It's been raining here for two months solid, so the air quality is pretty good now.

San Diego has a nice volume of air coming off the coast the keeps the air clean...

San Jose is in a Valley, mich like LA, so it gets trapped. It's still not that bad.

This would be the least of my concerns when moving here.

Air quality it MUCH better in San Jose than it is in San Diego. Here is a list of the top 25 cities with the cleanest air according to Money magazine. You can add cities and compare to the list. Best places to live 2008 - Top 25: Cleanest air - from MONEY Magazine
