The first time I heard the word Frisco was in a 2Pac song called "California Love".

I have never heard a White person refer to San Francisco as Frisco.

I never once heard a native, or at least longer term resident call it "frisco." I remember one of the freebies (Weekly or Guardian, cant remember which)deriding that.

I was always content with "the city," even if it annoys people from San Jose.

If you come here and call it "Frisco" I guarantee that I will glare at you.

Most of the time using Frisco makes you sound like a hick . . .

The whole Frisco thing isn't as black and white as some would have you believe. If you're not from the bay and you say it however, it can be seen as annoying.

Personally, being younger and into hip-hop myself (especially local stuff), "frisco" is an everyday word for me. I wasn't even aware of the saying "don't call it Frisco" until I was 13 or 14, and i've lived in SF my entire life. My sister once had a boyfriend who moved here from Massachusetts, and he took to saying Frisco often. Don't ask me why, but it irked the hell out of me. I think you have to know the right way say it, and use it in the right context. Hell if I know what that context is though...i just know that when some people say it, it sounds completely wrong for some reason
Yep, this is completely true. It all depends on the context. A lot of rappers will call it that, and if they're natives they can say it. Same with gang members and such. But most of the time when someone calls it that they're from some other part of the Bay or even farther out, and for some reason its really noticeable. I've never been able to put my finger on it either, but I find it annoying too. I think there's just a certain level of familiarity in peoples' tone when they say it that makes it detectable whether they are local or not.

LOL. Its been called "the City" since before San Jose was more than a small farming community, so if it bothers them that you call it that that's their problem. All the more reason to stick with that terminology.

Or like someone trying to sound cool, like they've got the inside scoop on what to call the City. But it will never annoy me as much as "San Fran." I don't know why so many people, primarily from the East Coast, insist on calling it that. That's the only one I truly can't stand.

And I don't care for people saying "Frisco" with an obvious distaste. I used to have a couple of co-workers from San Jose that hated SF and they'd always call it that with a tone that made it obvious they meant it as some sort of insult.

Do you consider the late 2Pac to be a hick ? Because the word Frisco was mentioned in his song California Love.

I never hear the word Frisco being used in country music songs.
