Looking to move to the Peninsula. Our target location is Burlingame, but don't want to be closed minded about the peripheral cities down there. We like Burlingame and realize the higher price tag, but that is also somewhat comforting because we'd be in a better position to buy back in SF if we absolutely hate the burbs. Belmont visually is the most like Marin to us ( which would have been our top choice if it weren't across the Golden Gate Bridge) The small town feel in Belmont seems nice, but is it good place to buy? What are the people like in Belmont vs Burlingame? Which city has the worst "bad" area? School Districts????

From the tone of questions you sound very closed minded indeed. If you really like Marin, and that's the kind of environment you want, then you're probably best off not compromising (whether the compromise is real or not) just because of the bridge. The commute from the peninsula is not necessarily any better. That said, Burlingame and Belmont are both considered desirable "destination cities" that thousands aspire to hopelessly, and that only the most demanding could look down on for any reason.
