SAN FRANCISCO - The day Ken Baldwin decided to kill himself, he drove past his office and proceeded directly to the Golden Gate Bridge. Gazing at the Pacific Ocean over a railing only four feet high, he found the sole remaining impediment to his death was his own willpower, which turned out to be fleeting.

I think so. It's pretty high, maybe they should dismantle it.

Leave the bridge just the way it was built. Idiots will always find a way to commit suicide. I have no sympathy for these type of people.

Nope, never said that. I was talking about people wanting to commit suicide. How far should we as a society go to prevent suicides. There are too many ways one can carry this out if determined. Everything can not be made safe and sterile in our lives. There's a certain amount of risk in our lives the day we were all born. Everyone will go sometime. No one ever beat the odds.

If you don't agree with my rather blunt way of stating my opinion, you have that right.

Honestly 99% are. Not all, just most. Go ahead and plaster me with all kinds of nonsense now because I wrote that.

I say tear it down and build it higher, more popular and make it more "in" to jump off it.

I did see it, and I agree, it's a great film. I saw it at a screening that included a Q & A with the filmmaker and he clearly thinks there should be some kind of suicide barrier. I don't agree with that, and don't think his film was any kind of proof that preventing people from jumping off the GGB would stop the people who would have jumped from killing themselves somehow. It seemed to me, the people who jumped would have been facing the same issues that lead them to that decision with or without the bridge, and putting up a suicide barrier would only change the location of their death. What I thought was much more obvious in the film is how our collective neglect of the mentally ill, and the lack of mental health services for those most vulnerable, leads to tragedies like suicide.....and..dun dun daaaaaa... homelessness.

I don't know where you're getting your stats but I'd say 99% of homeless are war vets (a war vet being the opposite of "lazy bum"), or mentally ill, or just plain outta luck with no family support.

Neither of the above qualify for "sure, kill yourself, who cares."
