And I forgot, I almost got mugged one time at the Jack London Square area late at night and that is considered a safe area. Luckily, my ride came in time to save me or I would not really know what would have happend to me.

I stand by what I said in being street smart in Oakland.

Laney, Jack London, and Lake Merritt all have one thing in common. They are really dark and deserted at night. I would be careful at night as well. Because it is dark and there isn't much foot traffic. Areas like this are generally places to be wary of in any city.

I haven't had issues in Oakland, and avoid dark streets with few pedestrians. One of the important street starts lessons everyone should know when traversing any urban area.

Yes, you are right that some parts of Oakland are safe such as the Montclair area, some areas above the 580 freeway, Rockridge/College Ave area or maybe up in the Oakland Hills. But for me, I would use street smarts in those areas also just to be safe because it is Oakland.

I want to make sure I understand you would feel more at risk in the uppermiddle class/affluent areas upper rockridge ,claremont pines or crocker highlands than say the mission, tenderloin, western addition because those gang /drug dealer infested areas are in san francisco and not oakland ?

Um, it makes to use street smarts in all cities. This is by no means an Oakland exclusive. I do it everywhere from Oakland, to SF, to SJ, to Walnut Creek and Dublin. Not sure what you are getting at here.

You need to use your brain in Pac Heights too, it doesn't mean that I will characterize all of SF as dangerous. *rolls eyes*

JLS is surrounded by dumpy areas full of sketchy characters. There are a few cool places there like Yoshi's, but outside of that I don't like the area because of the sketch factor. And I say that as someone who really likes Oakland.

JLS is mostly fine, but it does feel sketchier than Rockridge, Piedmont Ave, or Lake Merritt.

I think it's more due to the industrial/warehouse feel of the neighborhood and the lack of lighting at night than anything else.
