I am moving from Kansas City to the San Diego Area and am trying to find the best option for moving as well. The cheapest option I found is to install a hitch on my car and tow a very small u-haul trailer about $350 and another $500 estimated fuel costs. I have heard the mountains make it tough and may even make this impossible as I have a 4 cylinder car.

I checked out http://www.upack.com/ and the quotes came in about $1300 and renting a 10 foot truck from budget ran about $1000 with unlimited miles but then I still need to get my car there..shipping my car came in about $750.

There appears to be no way around it whether you pay to ship your stuff or buy it when you get there.
