the gaslamp is a cool area to visit, but i'm not sure i'd want to live there. my parents own a condo down there and I go to visit on occassion. most places down there are geared for tourists. after dark, the place turns into night club central, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your interests. there are neighborhood amenities like a grocery store and shops and what not, but in my visits, i've yet to find a locals only type place (maybe i'm looking in the wrong place). i've been to little italy a few times and the locals scene seems to be stronger there, but i could be way off. otherwise, there are a ridiculous amount of places to grab a drink and everything is overpriced as local businesses compete to gouge tourists as much as possible. the area is definitely walkable though, especially in the mornings before the fatties from the cruise ships pour in.
