While visiting San Diego this week, I was amazed at the beautiful large purple flowering trees all over the city. While visiting Balboa Park, I saw several of these trees there -- and asked one of the horticulture workers the name of the tree. He said it was "J----- Mimosa Flora". I can't remember the first name he spoke...it was something like "Jackamunda". He had an accent and I didn't quite understand him. Would appreciate it if someone would let me know the name of this gorgeous tree! It has fern-like green leaves which seem to drop off as the gorgeous heliotrope flowers bloom and the tree is literally covered with these beautiful blooms. Please respond directly to:

Thank you.

Sounds like jacaranda trees. We have a lot of them up here in OC and they're really nice to look at. The flowers get messy when they drop though.

Those "beautiful" trees stain sidewalks and sticks and damages the paint on cars. Not a fan of them.Plus they smell kind of funny.

Jacarandas are beautiful trees, so are the pink silk mimosas "Dr. Seuss truffula trees" you see all over. I'd love to plant one in the front yard but fear the roots damaging the walkway/driveway. If someone knows of a pretty tree without a big root system, please advise. I've already cut down two ficus trees, a carrotwood, and one silk mimosa tree.

those are the messiest trees ever. I think they are even messier than the jacaranda trees. And they get huge. They also come in a bush form I think.
