My wife and I both have the possibility for transfers with work to in the San Diego area..
My wife will be working at SAN, and I will be working at San Diegio Brown field Airport, in south san diego.

We both don't really want to commute more then 20 minutes.
The commute would be daily for me, and once a week for my wife.

We are currently in Arroyo Grande, CA, just south of San Luis Obispo,CA.
Although we love this area, it is extremely expensive, and right now my wife commutes 3-4 hours to SFO a week. We are also looking for the advantages and opportunities that come with a larger city.

Any areas to live? We have a one year old daughter, and safe and nice are important to us.
Our budget for a house is up to 650K.

We will be up in San Diego next month, any areas we should check out? Any suggestions or comments?
Thanks!

Imperial Beach offers your wife a trolley to downtown, and there's a shuttle bus that goes to SAN. Drawbacks are the quality of schools. Farther east is a newer area called Eastlake, with good schools. Drawback would be extra commuting time for your wife (to either drive to the trolley or drive to downtown).

In between SAN and Brown Field would be Chula Vista and National City. I'd choose Eastlake over either of these two.

And in Imperial Beach, be careful where you live. I don't live there, but when we drive down through there I see areas I'd feel comfortable walking around, and other areas not so much.

I think Eastlake is a good bet. You can still buy alot of house for your price range there. If you take the toll road you could be at Brownfield in 10-15 minutes and without the toll probably 20-25. Your wife's commute would be about 30-45 minutes depending on what time of day.

Eastlake is a nice master planned family community. Everything you need is there. I live in Bonita and we go to Eastlake for our shopping and stuff.

Another vote for Eastlake/Otay Ranch.

For your price point, check out the community called Rolling Hills Ranch. Nice single family homes with no Mello Roos and little HOA. Holling Hills will also over a good connection to the SR-125 (toll road) or the I-805.

During rush hour, it may take about 45 minutes to get to downtown without using the toll road.
