I was wondering if there are any good bike paths that start in or near downtown that you would recommend? I won't be putting a bike rack on my car so I would have to start from the downtown area where I live.

Also what about for running? I could drive to some locations nearby if there is a beautiful run you would recommend? I prefer a paved surface to a trail.

Thanks!

There is the strand off Coronado, you can ferry across otherwise the closest designated paths are further North. You can bike/run around the big bay and mission bay at a slower pace. I ride with traffic so I don't sweat the no bike path thingy.

Yes. Depending on where you are downtown. Starting after the Embarcadero and terminal going north/northwest along the Bay is where the actual path starts. Obviously you can start before that on the roads downtown, but for all intents and purposes....

The path goes all along the bay on N Harbor Dr past Shelter Island near the airport into Pt Loma. From there that same path ends and goes to streets at Nimitz Bl. From there you can keep heading west try to climb over the hill towards the ocean, or head north towards Liberty Station which is far easier.

This time of year isnt too bad for cycling near Harbor Island and the Pt Loma area. When summer comes around it gets hairy from the tourists not paying attention etc.

Yep, in the summer and on the weekends I don't leave the house to start a ride after 8am. It gets exponentially more dangerous the later in the day.

The strand is surprisingly both noisey and unscenic. I have other preferred bike paths, but one would mostly need a car and rack to get there.

Another trail that I really like that is a short drive from Downtown is the OB Bike Path which runs along the SD River.

The best spot to park is on the street under the freeway overpass's just passed Old Town and Taylor St. Take it west to the inlet at OB near dog beach or east towards Mission Valley.

Just an FYI: If you just google "san diego" and check out the overhead map of SD, there is a filter that overlays a good number designated bike paths.

Yep, That's why I leave early before the idiots are out driving. A fender bender with a bike will likely kill you. I just add in the extra time it will take me to do my ride for the areas you need to slow down. At 20+ mph your brakes are useless and you'll grate a tire down to the rim in about 2 seconds.
