I work downtown and I've been driving down from P.Q. for the past year. It is driving me insane, and making me broke, especially with gas lately. I'm moving to North Park in a few weeks and want to try to bike...it would be about 4 miles, from Utah St. to the concourse/C St./Broadway area.
I'm really sick of driving, but know nothing about biking in urban San Diego. I don't even have a bike or helmet, at this point (I do a spinning class every other morning that I'd be delighted to swap for actual outdoor riding) so I just want to get an idea of how retarded or practical my brilliant plan is.

If anyone has any advice, please share!! Thanks!

biking is a great idea, especially if you're only going 4 miles. this distance should really only take you about 15 or 20 minutes, maybe quicker if theres a bike trail for you to ride on. i would pick up a helmet for safety's sake and maybe get some reflectors as well. you'll also have to consider how much you'll be sweating, if your office has a shower and if you'll need to bring a change of clothes to work with you. the great thing about socal is that you can commute on your bike year round because of our great weather and limited precipitation.

I agree, probably the best and least traffic way is to ride down Florida St. I commute two days a week from University Heights to Del Mar. It's great!

wow, thanks for the replies!!

I'm definitely going to look into it, at least a few days of the week. True, the weather is perfect for it. It just feels so wrong to sit inside/in a car all day when I live in this big frickin playground.

I'd kill to be able to bike to work. Pershing Drive, which runs along the Balboa Park Golf Course, is another way to get downtown. If I'm not mistaken, it's pretty close to Utah St.

I had some crutches for sale on Craigslist that I just sold. Some guy bought them off of me. He was hit by a car while riding a bicycle. Those bicycle helmets are stupid. I would never wear one. I read about a kid in San Diego who was hauling ass down a hill. There was a landscape truck parked on the side of the road. The kid, a teenager, nailed the truck and he died. It happened about a year ago, if that. I think it happened in Rancho Pensaquitos or somewhere like that. He was wearing one of them dumb bicycle helmets. There are better things you could put on your head.

Default Bike to work

"I work downtown and I've been driving down from P.Q. for the past year. It is driving me insane, and making me broke, especially with gas lately. . . ."

I am a freelance reporter for a community newspaper. I will be talking with people in North Park about increasing gas prices. Would you be willing to talk with me about your interest in biking it? You can e-mail me at cbuc100387@aol.com if you are interested. I am not able to access my e-mail until this evening.
