I have always wondered, and at the same time think its sad, that people in S.D. don't support their University more. I first noticed it way back in the late 70s. I went to ASU in Tempe, AZ and love my university and all its sports programs, as does most of Phoenix even if they didn't attend ASU. They don't fill their stadium anymore, and that is sad. But still they have much support and loyalty from native Arizonans. I have gone to several SDSU games over the years and wondered where are all the S.D. supporters. I can only guess that UCSD has even less support from the community. I root for both, except if they ever play my Sun Devils of course.

Generally speaking, I dont think the local Universities have that type of bond with San Diego, thus, locals dont have an emotional attachment to it.
I am not really a stats guy per se but it would be interesting to see how many graduates from SD schools stay here after school. That might help shed some light on the lack of participation.

There are also lots of other activities besides sitting round the camp fire that the student body and and locals would rather do methinks.

As far as I know, UCSD has no legitimate sports program.

Aztecs weren't doing that well at the free throw line last night that's for sure.
