How much traffic can we expect? If we leave at 8am or if we leave at 4pm? Is there much of a difference? And I should mention we are driving this Friday,so I am assuming there will be more traffic because of the holiday.

Thanks for any advice!

I only ever seem to hit traffic coming home, but I generally leave in the morning heading out there- I'd imagine you'd hit some traffic at afternoon rush hour around Riverside.

The shortest time it's ever taken me was under 5 hours on the way out (I won't say how fast I was driving) and 8.5 hours on the way home... But that was at the tail end of President's day weekend in some nasty weather.

P.S. Have fun!!

Leaving at 4 pm, it's could be pretty bad, especially if you're starting south of 52.

Why not leave at 7?

We did the drive to Las Vegas last Memorial Day. We left at 6pm in the evening on the Friday and got to Vegas in 4.5 hours (.5 hours was spent to gas up and a little dinner along the way). Traffic was actually lighter than I expected.

Coming back home was another story. We left Vegas at 11am on the Holiday Monday and got home at 8pm! No side trips or anything. Bumper to bumper traffic and idiot drivers everywhere. There were 3 major crashes along the way.

Having learnt that, I would never personally drive to Vegas on a long weekend ever again.

Just made my first trip to Vegas by car this past weekend. Took us about five hours both way but that was accomplished by living at 11 am on Friday and 9:30 am on Sunday - - and Vegas was relatively dead as it often is on the weekend before a holiday (especially a three-day holiday).

As someone who drives almost exclusively on the 5, 8, 15, and 805, driving on three lane highways is bad enough - - but driving on the two lane highways past Barstow is maddening. But at least I didn't have to experience this:

http://www.vvdailypress.com/news/barstow-20124-chp-killed.html

We passed this going back at noon - - when the people had been stuck in completely stopped traffic for 9 hours in (at noon) 102 degree temperatures. As it says, traffic backed up 15 miles to Victorville.

Don't leave at 4pm on a Friday! Especially on a holiday weekend! 8 or 9am would be better unless there is a wreck or something.

Last time I went to Vegas on a Friday, we left around 2pm and it took around 7 hours because of rush hour traffic on the 15 in Ontario. This was not on a holiday weekend.

Have tons of fun!!

Ahhhh Man! It doesn't look like we are going to be able to leave early (hubby can't get off work). I have no desire to sit in traffic for an extra 2 hours. Boy oh Boy....

Oh well, we're goona win big, so it will be worth it! haha!

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Too bad I was going to say earlier the better! Or leave at 9pm! It's not driving there that sucks, its the drive back! I refuse to drive to Vegas ever again because on my last drive there and back it took us 10+ hours to get home. That was not a fun trip after having no sleep the entire weekend!

Consider for next time:

Southwest Airlines out of San Diego to Las Vegas has their own mini-terminal with only 2 gates and their own security line PLUS a Karl Strauss Brewery. It's $99 to fly there; totally worth it over driving (especially at an operating cost of $0.50 a mile to drive).

Is that $99 from SD to LV a round trip deal or one way? If it's for one way i'm pretty sure that i saw flights from SD to LV for like only $59 one way, but i may have been looking at LA to LV i don't remember now. If it's $99 round trip then i'd say that's a fine deal especially if one had a vehicle that didn't get great gas mileage.
