I'm back in Seattle - told the wife to cycle the sprinkler system on Thursday before it freezes and leave all exterior faucets so they drip slowly, then put on the spigot covers I bought before going to SAT to fly out.

All the plants are in... blueberry and raspberry bushes in 80 gallon pots are just loads of fun to move. At least they'll all be alive when I return.

Question. You're going to let the faucets drip while the spigot covers are in place?

I have a very slow dripping faucet too, but I will probably replace it before the bone chiller heads this way. Then will cover with spigot covers. Most of the time I just put them on at the start of winter unless I'm using a faucet for something.

Yep.

The only thing left alone is the sprinkler system, but I think the ground should keep it warm enough and the few pipes that extend 12in or so in the air shouldn't have any water in there since the system isn't pressurized or air-tight when off.

We put in a "turn off" valve in line above four of our faucets. We just turn off the valve and open up the faucets to drain the line, that takes care of the front yard. Works great

Did the same thing with our outdoor kitchen, put in a valve that shuts the water off to the restroom, ice machine, sink and another faucet.

It is so much easier now. I would highly suggest having this done.
We are on a well and have installed all of our outdoor plumbing ourselves so we know where the lines run. It may be a little different in town.

Keep warm everyone!! I'm glad that my daughter and myself are off Friday!! woo hoo, don't have to get out in the cold .

I just got a robo-call from the company that installed my water softener many years ago. They're recommending that their customers leave a stream of water running in their faucets while the temperature is in the 20s this week, to prevent the softener and the softener's plumbing from freezing. If the softener is outside, they recommend covering it with a blanket.
