Probably true.

For the benefit of Mililani Gal, HEB is a San Antonio-based grocery chain. They are the dominant player in the San Antonio grocery market, with about 40 stores. A couple of smaller chains, Handy-Andy and La Fiesta, have about six or eight stores a piece, concentrated in a few, mostly older neighborhoods. Handy-Andy was once a major chain in the San Antonio area, with stores all over town.

As mentioned, there are also a few independent and specialty grocery stores in San Antonio, in addition to some Walmart and Target stores, but HEB is the only one virtually guaranteed to be in your neighborhood.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I appreciated the information about your local supermarket chains. I was shocked to find out that Safeway/Alberston's is not in San Antonio (SA). My husband and daughters have been in SA since August. I'm moving up in December. He doesn't have time to look for grocery deals and buys what he needs when he needs it usually at HEB or Costco. However, when I get up there we'll be back in "bargain" mode and I'll need those ads to help us get by until I find a job. As we say in Hawaii -- "Mahalo"

Here's wishing everyone a very joyous Thanksgiving!

Hey Mil'... I miss Oahu. Y'all coming from Schofield Barracks?

Unfortunately, Albertson's has left San Antonio (but there are a few in surrounding areas if you are out taking a Hill Country drive).

Aloha, HillCountry! Close...born and raised on Oahu. Living in Mililani Town for the last 30 years! YIKES! I can't believe its been that long! Finally giving up on trying to "live" in Hawaii. Looking to live in San Antonio, instead of surviving Hawaii. Got two little girls to think of and we can't enjoy life's many adventures in the middle of the Pacific! We're going to try and visit Hawaii every couple of years!

Well, there's definitely more jobs here, that's for sure (though that's not saying much due to the economy lately). I was wondering, is Rosie's Cantina still open in Haleiwa? I heard it went out of business...

For grocery stores, I would still suggest HEB. They are a vital part of our economy and way better than Target or WalMart, IMHO.

Unfortunately Rosie's Cantina did close. From what I hear it was a combination of the economy and a lease dispute. Too bad, it truly is a loss for the North Shore.

I'll definitely be doing the HEB-thing. I try to always shop local businesses first. HEB is everywhere in San Antonio, and prices there seem pretty good to me. At least compared to what we have in Honolulu.

Aloha, and Hau'oli La Ho'omakika'i (Happy Thanksgiving in Hawaiian)!!!
