I have photos taken from the Witte Museum today. Even though it's smaller than the Natural History Museum in LA http://www.nhm.org, my kids enjoyed it. I also noticed people camping at a nearby park. Is that a usual Easter weekend activitiy here in SA, and do you need permit to camp?

Easter camping is allowed at Breckenridge Park from Thursday 11PM and all campers must depart on Sunday night. Permits are not needed but people "mark" their campsite with chairs, etc. before Thursday. Many families have been doing this for several generations. This is the only time of year that camping is permitted.

BTW, great pics HI2VegasNowSA.

Behind the Witte is a park with a playground. You can bring bread and feed the ducks and there is a bridge that if you cross you will happen upon the old bathhouse. People used to be able to swim there. It backs up to the zoo and is so much fun to go discover especially with kids.

Witte museum is off Broadway, near the Hilderbrand exit at 281. I wonder if there is a day when admissions is free (Eg, I read that zoo admissions are free after 3pm on Tues).

If my memory serves me correctly, I think the Witte and the San Antonio Museum of Art also have free admission on Tuesday. Possibly the McNay as well....best to check with them directly.

RE:Camping.....it's really more like staking claim to the primo spots in the park for Easter than family camping. It's a very long time history here. You'll see the same thing going on along the Battle of the Flowers Parade route before Fiesta Week. Especially under the 281/35 overpass exchange along Broadway. Some people will camp out for several days ahead of time to make sure the whole family gets the best view of the parade.

I don't know about the SA museum of Art but the Witte does have free admission on Tuesdays. For their special temporary exhibits you still have to pay $2.00 per person. But you don't have to do that. And there is so much else to see. Especially for the kids is the HEB science treehouse. The kids will love that part!

I used to have a family membership to the Witte Museum. It's inexpensive entertainment for younger kids and if you travel, the membership entitles your family to free admission at dozens of other ASTC science museums around the country.
